Done for speeding

Got nicked for doing 80mph on the M6 last Tuesday. How ridiculous.

Nat 14 March 2005 09:29 AM

Where bouts on M6? How'd they catch you?

MarkO 14 March 2005 09:37 AM

It was these guys. They were on a bridge north of the A66 junction.

Daft thing was, I know I was going about 78mph or so around there (and that's from my GPS, not my speedo) but 80mph!?!?

I won't contest it though, as 3 points and a £60 fine is annoying, but not worth spending solicitor's fees on.

TonyFlow 14 March 2005 09:41 AM

Bloody hell - that's a bit steep - I (nearly) always stick to 80mph on motorways as I thought that is what you could easy get away with - obviously not in cumbria!

the moose 14 March 2005 09:45 AM

MarkO

What a shocker. I'd never condescend to drop below 80 on a clear motorway, and I've got a clean licence.

I can feel my luck running out as I type .........

MarkO 14 March 2005 10:01 AM

I know. It's totally daft IMO.

Mind you, given that I was driving down to my dad's funeral at the time, it really just topped off what had been a pretty sh1te week all round.

elgordano 14 March 2005 10:22 AM

why do you think you would you get away with 80 when the limit is 70 ??

Nat 14 March 2005 10:37 AM

He said he was doing 78 GPS verified, that is within the limits reccomended by the Association of chief police officers...

Vegescoob 14 March 2005 10:39 AM

T'is easy money to help Gordon's black hole.

That sucks. Best wishes Mark.

Because whilst the limit is indeed 70mph, IMO (and most other peoples' - including most coppers...) 80mph is totally reasonable and acceptable on a deserted motorway in the middle of rural countryside when the weather is dry and bright with approximately 50 miles visibility.....

Little Miss WRX 14 March 2005 10:53 AM

All the best to you and the rest of the family Mark.

80mph is a bit of a bugger to be caught at IMHO. It is amazing how many people do actually stick to that speed.

elgordano 14 March 2005 10:55 AM

i didn't say 80 wasn't 'reasonable' but the limit is 70 ;)

Leslie 14 March 2005 11:04 AM

I dont think they have to stick to the ACPO recommendations so whenever you exceed the posted limit you are risking getting caught I'm afraid.

I thought the recommended limits were for indicated speed to factor in the errors in the speedo, rather than actual speed. Wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong though :D

TonyFlow 14 March 2005 11:11 AM

Agree with the people saying "the limit is the limit" - and fair enough the law is the law. But I just feel there would be some leeway on a motorway that is all (rightly or wrongly so). In a 20/30/40/50, I will stick religiosuly to the limit (much to other drivers chagrin) National speed limit is fair game, but as said, I will mostly stick to 80mph on a dual carriageway (whilst what seems like all other cars will hare past at 90+mph - people seem to drive much faster now on motorways - doncha think?)

Stevie.p 14 March 2005 11:55 AM

Mark O sorry to hear that you got done and i think that's a bit harsh to do you at 80mph on a motorway  but cumbria constabulary apparently have a bit of a reputation for doing people for speeding on the M6.

But like you say might as well take the £60 and 3 points if thats you're only points then it should'nt affect you're insurance too much.:thumb: :thumb:

paul-s 14 March 2005 12:21 PM

i just got an nip for an incident on the M6, dont even live round there ! just happenened to be passing thru

MarkO 14 March 2005 12:38 PM

I was only passing through.

The laugh of it is that having got a 3-pointer from a gatso in April 2001, when I send off the licence to be endorsed with the new 3, the old ones will be removed. So it'll have absolutely zero effect on anything. :)

sarasquares 14 March 2005 12:43 PM

i'd delay paying as long as you can, cameras are surley going to be scrapped soon then it wont matter:p

i got flashed twice in 7 miniuts 18 months ago and took it to court, i didnt turn up twice got a letter telling me it would be heard in my absence...........i was on holiday.........never heard a thing back:D

i was doing 48 and 56 in a 30 zone. i hadnt had the scoob long and was testing it out;)

TonyFlow 14 March 2005 01:02 PM

Don't mean to preach or sound like a tw4t but

sorry but IMHO that is unacceptable and you deserve to get nicked...those speeds in a 30 limit gives the marque a bad namehttp://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/angry_2.gif

sarasquares 14 March 2005 01:12 PM

i **** my pants though, thought i was going to lose my liscence (sp):freak3:

ive got a road angel now;)

just so no-one jumps on me, it was a duel carriageway with the speed restriction, so no little kiddies out and about, just other cars doing the same as me:Suspiciou

so wasn't really a 30 zone it was a temporary speed limit on a derestricted road...I'll get off my high-horse thenhttp://www.my-smileys.de/smileys2/54.gif

you can stay off the horse, it was a permenant limit, but the duel carriegeway was raised up above the road, further along there was camera signs warning of cameras.
i argued the speed limit as there were no visiable signs and was told that ignorance is no excuse and you can work out the speed limit by working out how far apart the lamposts are, but on this road the lamposts were on the road below with just the lamp part visiable, i just assumed the lamposts were nothing to do with the duel carriageway as they were on the road below(my story), i dont know if this could have changed the decision but ive still got my liscence:p.and they never wrote back to me on a descision:confused:

i'm not one of those aresholes that drive round residential roads scaring the **** out of old ladies;)

the longer the time the more i think i got fogotten about:freak3:

horse back in its field where it would have stayed if i had ALL the info not just a headline that seduced me into bitching about my pet hate; speeding (especially excessive), in a 30 zone. I live in a 30 zone that has cars parked both side of the road and pr!cks continue to hoof it up and down my road and it really gets up my nose...
