Gear Lever Vibration / Rattle Help

Hi. I have a MY99 which has suddenly picked up an annoyong rattle.

Whilst going along in any gear and even neutral, you can hear it from the gear lever. If you push the gear lever lightly left right up or down you hear the vibration or rattling get louder. Pressing the clutch in and out does not affect the sound. Putting it in neutral and revving the engine when going along does not effect the sound. Being in gear going along the sound seems louder when you are not under power (ie take foot of acelerator). Whilst at standstill you cannot simulate the sound at all, it only there when going along.

There is no loss of drive, it does not crunch or grind or jump out of gear like it does when synchros are gone.

Is there something connected to the botton of the gear lever which stops it vibrating which wears away, a bush or something ? How come the vibrations only there when the cars in gear ?

Has anyone had a similar experience ? Can anyone suggest what it may be ?
Any technical explaination about how the gear lever connects to the gear change (simplified) would also be useful to help me understand it.

Cheers in advance.

Does the rattle seem to be coming from the shaft itself, or from down within the transmission tunnel?

Is it a standard gearstick, or a quickshift?

INGHAM 12 March 2005 04:37 PM

Now seems to be linked to reverse :(

Its a subaru quick shift and sounds like its coming from several inches below the gator part of the gear lever.

However!! I have just checked the gear oil level and its ok. Put it in reverse to go backwards up and off of my drive and reverse juddered and now its clicking as well as vibrating. I have a feeling that means its linked to a gear or reverse synchro or something.

I have just come straight home and do not fancy testing it further at mo as it does not sound good.

Any further ideas after this new revelation...??

Thanks.

Does it jump out of 5th gear sometimes?

Have you been having problems selecting reverse?

INGHAM 12 March 2005 04:52 PM

Never jumped out of gear

Its never jumped out of gear and I drive it hard.

Goes into reverse the same as it has for 3 years,
quiet, quick crunch sound on very odd ocassion.

Only reason I asked is that the MY99 gearbox was prone to a loose 5th gear retainer, causing the 5th gear to jump out occasionally.

Mine did it, as did a few others.

Hi, i also have a MY99, mines done 78K Miles, mine started making a funny rattling / vibrating noise in 3rd gear (you could feel it through gear stick to) and now the cars in the garage as i think the gearbox has gone  it may be just a pin that has worked loose they think...

it totally failed and had no drive in 3rd. The rattle got worse over a few days previous and i got the occasional crunch when selecting 3rd gear, hopefully yours isnt going the same way! but i wish id of got mine checked out before i was doing 6000RPM in 3rd and it went bang!

they are opening the box up today so il know the damage later!

Bit of a longshot, but it may be the propshaft UJ vibrating for some reason. It may be worn or imbalanced for some reason. I only say this as you say it only does this in every gear only when the car is in motion, which is the only time the prop will turn, hence it doesn't do it when stationary in any gear or neutral.

I have a MY97 Turbo that is giving a rattling sound from the gear lever. There is quite a bit of free play in the gear lever position and by moving it around a bit, the noise changes or disappears. My mechanic tells me it is worn gear lever bushes, but he is too busy crewing for some private Group N Subaru teams in overseas rally events to actually fix it for me.
