P1 to MY05 Handling!
I just changed from a P1 to an MY05 Sti PPP and to be honest I'm not sure it was the best thing.
Firstly the six speed box takes some getting used to, well, for the first 1000 miles anyway! I find I keep shifting 5/6 while cruising on busy dual carraige ways. Secondly and most importantly, although the car turns in very well and all that, if I take corners a little enthusiastically I get this enormous 'your ar*e is gonna get thrown in the hedge feeling'. Is that the DCCD doing it's stuff and if so what's it doing? Or just perhaps I'm going a little quick in that situation, what do you think? Are you sure you got prodrive springs on a MY05 car - i dont think they've been released yet?

The A-DCCD can be a little un-nerving until you get use to it, but it sounds like thats what you can feel.

Springs were authorised the same day as the PPP, got the dealer to ring while I was there.
How do you know when the cars going to break out then if the DCCD makes you feel like that! |
The A-DCCD is changing the power front to rear/rear to front, especially when you enter a corner, you get use to it, and eventually you dont really notice it (probably because your being a bit more argressive going into the corners to worry about such things ;):D)

The best thing to do is to get to a track and learn how the car feels on the limit. Whilst there do the following when entering a tight corner (with lots of room, just in case). Car in Auto. :D Car in manual open. :D |
Yeah i have to agree the dccd is taking some getting used to, always oversteers, then you correct as the boost kick in in second and the back just seems to follow.
Only been brave enough to try it a few times in auto ! gona need a track day i rekon to learn how to drive properly....and to find the limits of the grip... |
I would definately check on those prodrive springs mate - Mike Wood has posted on these forums that the Sti 05 springs are still in development and not expected until late March..

Had P1 now have 05 JDM. The 6 speed box does take some getting used to compared with the 5 speed. Don't recall having the same reservations about the handling though - I find the 05 and DCCD very predictable and assured and the overall handling streets ahead of the P1. Definately take it on the track where you can learn how to drive it to the limit and beyond in relative safety.

CheersBen Sti PPP 18 inch ppf7's with Michelin rubber Prodrive springs i went off a straight into a r/bout, off the 1st exit and **** myself when the back drifted out, now in my uk99 turbo i know that it'll give a whiff of understeer,grip then away, but the sti was a whole different ball game. great fun though:) i loved the gearbox, always in the power band, only gripe was that i couldn't find third when i was going thru the gears quickly:o never been in a P1, but the jump from my humble classic to the sti was a world of difference, i'm sure once you get used to it you'll find it a much better car enjoy:D |
The 6-speed box takes a little while to loosen up, but now I have nearly 5000 miles on my JDM STI it's brilliant - nice short throw, very positive action.
One unexpected bonus is that 6th > 3rd is very easy and smooth, ideal for if you come to a roundabout on a fast road - cruise in 6th, brake, straight into 3rd and off like a rocket! |
MG do a lovely range of cars for people who find it difficult to cope with an 05 STI gearbox and handling characteristics. I think they throw in a free pipe and slippers too if you buy before the 1st of April.

mmmmm slippers..... are they the brown coloured ones that look like the same material cords are made out of? If not, I'm not interested and will be sticking with the scoob :D

Yes the six speed takes some getting used to., probably same as 70's folk going from 4 to 5 speeds lot more difference there and it caught on :D
I found having got the geometry done between two track days my 03 JDM had an unbelievable change. In the future, if I am fortunate to be able to afford a new car the first mod to be done will be the geometry. I cannot really explain the difference to you but it is like light and day. The settings outta the factory can be way out and mine were (approx a year old). Powerstation did mine and are highly recommended. |
Hmmm! I just want to get from slippers to Sonic-the-Hedgehog style rippers after the first service! Although a track day does seem a good idea.
Nathan, didn't we meet on the A21 one night a while back? Seen your motor on E-Sx scoobies I believe, nice motor. Mines black too and fancy the tints where did you get yours? Bartop, yes I did suspect there was something odd about springs suddenly available. How do you think I can go about finding whether they're pucker or not? Perhaps the notorious Mike Wood could help?
