Does your Road Angel bleep at Scam Cam Talivans?

Mine hasn't once in the 6 months I've owned it - and I have 3 points from a tiny transgression on the severn bridge caught by their covert Scam Cam Vans to prove it!

Assumed it was due to the thin revenue beam the Talivans send not hitting the device, but now I'm not so sure...???

Are you talking about an original Road Angel, as it doesn't have laser detection does it? If it doesn't, it won't pick them up- its a locator rather than a detector.

No mate it is the Road Angel 2 jobbie - sorry I wasnt clear.

My original Road Angel has a laser module which has gone off a couple of times for no apparent reason. Amazingly in the year I have had it I can only definately say I have been zapped by a scamera van once. It didn't go off, but the range was quite close to be fair.

They will only go off if you are being hut by laser from one so normally by the time it's gone off they've got you :( You have to be lucky and get a reflection off of another vehicle to get away with it going off before they've got you.

Both the original Road Angel, and the Road Angel II have laser trap detection. The only difference is that it is built in to the mkII version, whereas the original version was supplied with a separate 'pod' that plugs in. However, both are useless. The laser beam is so narrow that either detector will probably not see it, and even if it does, you've probably been clocked and nicked already. Bummer!

For those with a RA1, unplug the lazer detector pod attachment & bin it, then you have a much cleaner looking unit on your dash !

When the RA indicates a mobile camera, it does not specifically mean a laser trap, it is also programmed with the positions of the semi permanent traps that consist of 3 sets of loops embedded in the road (there's usually a small box on a post nearby, for plod to plug the camera part into).

Next time your RA warns of a mobile trap, take a look at the road surface, you should see 3 lines in the road, with a spacing of about 0.7m. Generally, the plod don't use these any more, vans with laser equipment in the back make far more money (and the plod can sit in a nice warm van)!

i have RA1 with the ball thing and its never gone off when passing mobile camera vans. never <touches wood> had it tested by a hand held gun yet either

it dont do any harm whether it works or not, so its staying where it is.

The RA goes off like a mad womens sh1t at any other camera though, especially around nottingham

Scoob99 07 March 2005 09:44 AM

I have RA1 and mine goes off 1 kilometer from where the van is parked:D I beleive you can set them at 1 kilometer, 500 meters and 250 meters from the static cameras and mobile ones too.
Cheers
Colin
