War of the Worlds Film

Just been told about the new War of the Wolrds film currently in production..

Actually, there are two apparently..

First one is by Spielburg and stars (heavan forbid) Tom Cruise..

And perhaps a more faithful translation of the book (with maybe slightly more wooden acting and effects)..

Saw the trailer weeks ago when I went to watch meet the fookers, it looked quite promising

Wot no Jeff Wayne? :(

One hopes that the new films are not as cheesy as the previous attempts. Obviously going to be some action filled ride. Is it set in the US or UK? One really does hope it's not another "The US saves the world entire" type of thing, ala Indepenance Day and The Day After Tomorrow.

I wonder if there will be a dozen dead bodies in the Euston road?

Nimbus 02 March 2005 03:45 PM

Spielburg one is set in the US I think..

Iain Young 02 March 2005 03:52 PM

The Jeff Wayne version rocks :D

Hmmm.... the pendragon one does look like it's staying faithfull to the book (as much as practicable) even the dialogue is unmistakenly early Victorian english!!!

Acting comes accross as a little wooden and the sfx (although limited) came accross as quite low budget.... mind you..... I can't wait to see what that machine is doing to the scantily clad screaming girl :norty:

I am looking forward to the Speilberg one ... he does have a nack of getting things right and love or hate Cruise..... He's a bloody good actor!

Meant the book, not the film....;) :D

Markus 02 March 2005 04:34 PM

Wasn't he the chap that Mork reported to? ;) :D

Sticky Stuff 02 March 2005 04:39 PM

All it needs is a screenplay to accompany Jeff Wayne's classic, and Bingo! Instant hit.

InvisibleMan 02 March 2005 05:02 PM

queue the empire state & Liberty being blown up

Brendan Hughes 02 March 2005 05:10 PM

...again...

Markus 02 March 2005 05:12 PM

Stef,
no, no, no! The Statue of Liberty will remain standing, everything else will be decimated, thus showing how powerful the US is!

I'm told in the new version, the martians vape most of the bush voting states, and then we all cheer, then they pop over to the UK and wipe out the chavs. We then rejoice and live happily ever after with the martians :D

InvisibleMan 02 March 2005 05:41 PM

they do in all of them. My advice dont live in LA or NY then you will be safe. Other states mustnt have any landmarks to show the americans where it is ;)

lol watched Indepence day the other day, laughed when the news mentioned the capitals by name for the major countries then just said 'the capitals' for the others as the americans wouldnt have a clue where they are

I adore War of the Worlds - I've always had this mad idea of staging it! A sort of high tech, surrounding the audience sort of a thing! Mad I know!

When I've had a few I like to try re-casting it - silly style! I used to cast Frankie Howerd in the Richard Burton role - these days I'm leaning towards Julian Clary or perhaps Joe Psquale.....? :D :D :D

(If I was to recast it seriously, I always fancied Patrick Stewart as the voice of Richard Burton - but who in the world could do the Phil Lynot role....? )

Markus 02 March 2005 06:23 PM

Beth,
lol @ Pasquale and Clary.

As for Phil's role, how about Chris Ecclestone or maybe Paul McGann? certainly could look mad and manic, and possibly sound as odd too.

mart360 02 March 2005 07:51 PM

Put waynes soundtrack with the Hg version !!!!

that gets my vote..

i was pi**ed off when i saw the opening for the us version..

how can you take a classic and *******ise it!!!

spielberg needs his bumps examining..

and as i said before if Cruise turns it into a every scene specia it will be a turkey..

Its the same old story with the yanks.. we havnt won a war, so we,ll take any oppertunity to show us winning one ( fictional or not)

cue cheesy mom & dad families.. small children in danger, a few pets.

dumb blondes / brunettes , a love interest.

A few major action sequences, whilst may be ground breaking, will be utterly crap, (were talking minds immesurably superior to ours (cept the americans LOL)

and it will all end on a hug / smile and joke..

oops i forgot and a token minority too

mart ;)
