What car for £7-8K
 

Thinking off changing my car. I drive a GTi-6 at the mo, cracking car but had it for a few years now and think its time for a change.

Got between £7-8K to spend.

Would love a scooby, but for that price I seem to only be able to buy with higher miles on it it then I would prefer, want a car with less then 50K. Also would like a car thats not too old, basically made after 2000/W.

Astra coupe turbos seem to be pretty good value for money, for about 8k you can get a car with a lot of extras.

Any one else got any ideas?

I've had both a 306 Rallye and a 306 GTi-6, you'll struggle to find much else that's as enjoyable to drive...

Have also owned a Clio Cup and a Civic Type-R in between the Rallye and the GTi-6, the Civic is out of your price range, however the Clio is not!

You "might" be able to pick up one of the first 172 Cups for the money you wanna spend, they first came out in 2002 and I'm sure there are some for ~£8k now. Alternatively the 172 Sport in both mk1 & mk2 flavour is in that price range too, if you fancy all the toys.

The Cup was a hoot to drive, more of a hooligan than the 306's are, and up to a tonne it was as quick as my CTR was, and initially quicker off the line!

You will get a sub 50k classic for that money if you hunt around. People are willing to let scoobys go cheaper than you think because they are tough to shift! However, be aware running costs are night and day compaired to a gti-6 :eek:

Definitely go and try a drive in an intergra type r, it would be high on my list at that kinda money. Maybe an accord type R as well?

I agree that you could find a scoob for 8k on a w plate with about 50k miles. There are lots at more money but most of them aren't going anywhere. They seem to sit on dealer forecourts for a while and there are private sellers wanting more.

Remember he wants a 2000 W-Reg or newer model, with less than 50k miles for under £8k so some of these cars people have suggested are not gonna happen...

There's a great choice for 172 Cups under £8k too. Fantastic Car, poor dealers, poor interior (especailly the seats), chances are you'd probably get niggly reliability/build quality problems but not that much of an issue as you'd get a newish one anyway.

You won't find a MY00 ITR with >50k miles for £8k at this time of the year.

Ibiza Cupra (R) is a good idea aswell.

EVO's & Imprezas will be at least twice as expensive to run/maintain/insure IMO.

What things are important to you? Car Size, Practicality, FWD/RWD/4WD. Low Down Torque/High End Power etc..

If you can stretch the point a little on miles, you can have a later scoob than you thought....mine has 51k, and it's a MY00 on an 'X'. It's now standard and 8k. This is what the dealer has offered, subject to me getting my arse into gear and taking it down there. I'd rather it went to someone on here tbh, 'cos I don't want to drive past the bloody place every day on the way to work and back and see it with an 11k sticker on the screen.

Indeed, bmw's are ruled out unless you want a E46 saloon for example, assuming you are after something medium size and sporty.

Integra could be found but there are very few around anyway. A 98R with any miles upto and above 100k could probably be shifted for 6k. I viewed a T plate one with 40k on it for about 8k last year though, so its not unbelieveable that a w plate could be that kind of money.

As asked before, whats important too you? I'm assuming sporty, 3dr or coupe unless a scoob or similar.

Just bought a MY99 Classic UK Turbo with 45K on the clock. In mint condition with resprayed bumpers for £7.8k. Oh and it has aircon as well, cool :D

Brand new Rover V8 rwd and 260bhp 4.6l there is no replacement for displacement lol

I bought a scooby on a 2000 V plate with PPP and aircon 57k miles FSSH for 8k.

I will 2nd the clio cup as an excellent used choice. Since you know all about french quality and dealers, it shouldn't be too hard to slip in to one of them.

Asuming you do want performance, a warm saloon with a lot of standard gear is the Octavia vRS. Solid VAG finish, very tuneable (240bhp [£550] to 400_ [£???]). Cheap to insure, unlike any type R, run etc etc.

If you don't want a fast car, the Lexus IS200 in a Sport or SE guise is a fantastic car to own, but maybe too bland for you.

my old impreza has come up for sale after 18months, the lad wants a change, the car is a 2000 W in deep blue metalic , it is simply stunning, not a mark on it, sensible mods on it like full decat system, clear indicators it has 66000 miles(i old it with 58k) no expense was spared on servicing when i had it. he is looking for 7750 ono in the autotrader(pic on website) but i know he would come much lower. i was given first dibs on it,but house extension (and wife likeing being a lady of leisure too much) means i had to turn it down!

My Accord may be grp 18 but I pay £420 full comp with protected NCB (25 yrs old with 7 years NCB, on street parking)

At 23 with 2 years no claims i was looking for a sporting car and went to see a Focus RS, LCR and CTR. I did all my research and got some insurance quotes. The leon and focus were £700 odd and the CTR was £1250.

The above was simply based on my my own experience. I ended up with a E30 M3 btw, and that cost me £900 fully comp !

Clio Cup, are these reliable, the lad who sold me my Rover BRM bought one and the gearbox lasted 3000 miles, about as long as the Head Gasket on the R-over.
