Decent MTB for £400?

A mate has £400 spend on a mountain bike.

he is happy to buy secondhand to get a better bike.

must have decent front suspension.

rear suspension is optional.

must have disc brakes.

will be used for general hacking around the likes of dorking and box hill. no Epic XC's, no jumping, no hardcore DH.

the guy is very strong so weight not a problem.

any thoughts?

I bought a hardtail before Xmas. bout the 2004 version of Kona Fire Mountain. no disc brakes though the 2005 version has but it is around £500. you will find that alot of last years model will be going cheap atm. stick to Kona and you will not go too far wrong. better still get down to a bike shop and try some out. i was happy enought to buy a £100 bike from halfrauds but having ridden a proper bike with suspension better brakes there is just no comparison
