actually - they're not silver - but it's Gunmetal Hammerite. I did do the lettering in white afterwards but it turned out rubbish so took it back off.

Mines are the same as above. Never bothered painting the letters. Look really good imho.

did you remove the calliper to paint or paint it on the car

scoobyp1 18 February 2005 12:48 AM

Removed the front calipers, removed pads and then used a wire brush to remove all the brake dust and any rust. Made sure they were clean and dust free and then applied 2 coats of caliper paint. Was supposed to do the lettering in white, but havent had time yet.
I left the rear ones on when i painted them

messiah 18 February 2005 11:52 AM

I painted mine on the car. Rubbed them down with a wire brush, then a good rubbing with a cloth until it more or less rubbed clean (although you can apply Hammerite directly on top of rust) then 2 coats of the Hammerite, although I wasn't that happy with the finished colour, the swatch on the tin is a lot darker than it actually is.

Hoping to paint my rears this weekend, just one of a myriad of jobs to do.

New new discs & pads to front. (new pics required afterwards methinks) :D
Replace wheel stud on N/S/F & N/S/R
Adjust Strut Bar.
Fit new parcel shelf.
Get side skirts colour coded.
Paint rear Calipers (need bled too)
Debadge.
Replace DV for the original.

Can just make them out.

jowl 18 February 2005 01:50 PM

and here was me going to buy new calipers! (though I would like some new 4-pot brakes)

Like the red, think I will try that soon....maybe when the weather is a bit warmer!!

Soulgirl 06 April 2005 11:53 AM

It seems a general consensus that hammerite is ok for application to callipers. Would the chemical makeup be different for each colour. I want to mix the white and red to obtain pink (funnily enough). Anyone think of a scientific reason why I can't?

7 Foot 06 April 2005 01:02 PM

Not a scientific one . . . . . . . . :p

Mine are silver with white writing - used Hammerite and painted on the car.

jowl 06 April 2005 01:18 PM

I have a 97 car (now with hammerite silver calipers) but they look nothing like the calipers in this thread....and don't say Subaru on them...is that tight?

messiah 06 April 2005 01:24 PM

only 4 pots have subaru on them - you must have 2 pots that were made by the devil...

Cheers. They did have some numbers on the edges...'666' or something :D

Used hammerite gold on mine and hand painted the lettering white which is rather fiddly. Had a thought after, that an easier way of doing the lettering would be to glue some rubber onto a piece of wood, then put some white paint thinly on the rubber, then press that up against the lettering, worth a try :)

I used to use cigarette butts for fiddly paintwork years ago.. they absorb the paint nicely and you dab it on the surface to be painted :D Like a spong applicator :D Well, it made fantastic pink polkadots for my 1947 Raleigh Rudge :D

Carl Davey 06 April 2005 05:29 PM

Cigarette butts may work well actually! Just need to find someone who smokes...

I'm off to do mine again shortly, going boring black with white lettering this time though.

Jowl, did you set out to paint your calipers or your brake pads? :p :D

I love cheeky tips like this. Nice one, would never have thought of that :thumb:

Soulgirl 06 April 2005 08:21 PM

When I paint mine I will take some photos throughout the process :D I wonder if it's feasable to put the rest of my swarovski blue crystals on the subaru word instead of painting it :D

Would the brakes not get too hot for Hammerite? It is definatly the cheaper option compared to the caliper paint they sell in Halfords though. :)

7 Foot 07 April 2005 03:32 PM

I wondered that but in the end just thought I'd give it a whirl. A year on I've had no ill effects but they could do with touching up in a few places.
