Satellite Tv
 

I have just moved out to the sticks where there is no cable telly and no freeview reception. I called Sky to re-fit my dish but due some trees in the neighbours property they couldn't get a signal.
Does anyone know if there is any other way of getting satellite telly? I'd like to be able to get sky for the sport. Any help would be appreciated:thumb:

They should be able to mount the dish on a pole? Or were they actual Sky fitters? In which case they would just try to hammer it on a wall on the ground floor.

Go to a proper Satellite shop and talk to them.

Like Steve says, the best solution would be to mount the dish on a pole to give it enough elevation to clear the trees.

If this isn't an option then you may find there is simply no way for a sky dish to get a line of sight to the satellite and as such you won't be able to pick up sky.

Of course you may be able to subscribe to other satellite services which use a different satellite positioning but these are mostly european services.

Could always hire a chainsaw and remove the offending trees of course :D

They rekon I'd need a 10ft pole on top of the house. Unfortunately, the deeds and covenants on the house wont allow this. I was wondering if I get a different dish and use a european satellite, would I be able to get any of Sky's channels?

What about mounting the dish on an outhouse, or even the back garden wall? they don't need to be mounted at height, you'd just need extra cabling which you could run in yourself to save a few bob.

Were they trying to install a minidish?

A bigger "normal" dish would help greatly with weak signals.

Is there a chimney on the house? And is it taller than the trees? Many sky installers seem to have a fear of heights (or a case of can't-be-arsed-to-get-the-big-ladders-off-the-van-itus) ;)

I find this very strange. We live "out in the sticks" and are surrounded by trees, yet we have sky plus and sky digital, the lot, and it works mighty fine. Our mini dish is on the side of the house. Not very high up either. :ponder2:

Install it in the trees???

You could always install it on the other side of the house, looking over the roof, If you see what I mean? i.e. rather than install it on the North side of the house, looking North, install it on the South side, looking North. You only need to go high enough to get line of sight over the roof (which is probably not very high at all), and it will give you a lot better chance of seeing over the trees.

I realise this might not be the best option in all circumstances - e.g. you probably don't want the dish on the front of your house.

Thanks for all your suggestions. As far as I am aware the dish has to point south at about 45 degrees. Unfortunately, my garden slopes uphill towards the south and the trees are about 40ft high. They are in the grounds of a converted Chapel, which then blocks out the signal if I try to put the dish on the top boundary of the garden!!! I can just about get a signal from ground level at the moment as there is no foliage on the trees but will get buggerall in the summer.
Anyway, I'm getting an independent aerial bloke to have a look today to see if he can come up with any ideas.:(
