skiddus_markus 12 February 2005 08:25 AM

As much as I like weight reduction,I wouldn't do it on the doors. If you're T-boned then the cf could cut you in half.Have you seen the way it splinters in F1 crashes?

StickyMicky 12 February 2005 09:50 AM

wonder why they dont do the rear doors?

mark6 12 February 2005 06:38 PM

probably because no ones bought a front door yet

IPKIS 12 February 2005 07:41 PM

If they did rear doors i'd buy them :)
no point just doing the fronts :cuckoo:

Dazza's-STi 13 February 2005 10:45 PM

Nice

But wtf would you tell the insurance company...:eek2:

Changing an integral part of the crash structure ir errrrr... well going to take some explaning!
or is it me?

Dazza

FASTER MIKE!! 13 February 2005 10:48 PM

but is'nt carbon supposed to be as strong as metal?

DJ73 14 February 2005 06:29 AM

that's what they say ? but it depend's ( i think) how thick

minty 14 February 2005 03:05 PM

They'd be ok on cars with a roll cage because of the cross bars in the door with regards to safety from side impacts i'd expect.

Silver Scooby Sport 14 February 2005 06:33 PM

Arn't these sort of carbon builds just naturaly dried opposed to being cooked ??
The strenghs are miles appart then I think ??
Maybe someone could enlighten me on this ?

Simon :)

Wonder Wagon 14 February 2005 06:42 PM

I would of said those doors had been vacumed bagged & baked the same as the front wings

GC8 14 February 2005 07:05 PM

If theyve only been laid-up similar to grp then theyll delaminate over time and they wont give you a deal of protection in an accident; if theyre properly autoclaved then theyll be a lot stronger, and a damn site dearer too. Of course; because proper carbon fibre kit costs a fortune to make virually every product available is made in a similar way to fibre glass and sold to punters relying on their ignorance.

Silver Scooby Sport 14 February 2005 07:40 PM

Thanks guys, yes if anyone was to spend serious cash on this sort of thing I would hope that they did their homework on the structural properties to the type of carbon they fitted....
I would imagine if it is made in this country there is an ISO standard that we must follow but I don't know how that works on the continent for imported parts ?
(that's not a comment about the doors before anyone asks but just carbon body parts in general) phew thats covered that !!

Simon :)

The real money earner would be if someone did burberry doors and bonnets, Argos could sell them, now that would look good on any cruise night.

And everyone knows burberry is as hard as the chavs that wear it so no safety issues

Buy some and test them at 50mph then.I'll see you in casualty;).

I like Cf panels but you have to ask yourself if it's worth it in the event of an accident. They might be as strong as metal but in an accident when metal exceeds it's capacity to remain in one peice it will buckle/crumple bend.Cf isn't as flexible so will inevitably snap.Personally I'd stick to the bonnet and wings as you have some extra protection between you and them.
