AV amp recommendations

After a new AV amp to replace my Sony 930 I have heard good things about the Yammaha stuff or maybe I should go Pioneer, ease of use is important along with multiple optical inputs :norty: any suggestions ?

Daryl 11 February 2005 08:45 AM

Budget?

AndyC_772 11 February 2005 09:17 AM

I have a Yamaha DSP-A1 - lots of optical inputs and it sounds fantastic, though I wouldn't exactly rate it as easy to use.

scooby L 11 February 2005 09:20 AM

My Denon AVR 1905 was £260, and it has 3 optical inputs, 80 watts per channel, 6.1, 5.1 or 7 channel stereo.

As Daryl said, what budget do you have?

sammyh 11 February 2005 10:31 AM

About £450 max :D

I recently changed my Sony 930 for a Denon AVR-2805. Probably a bit out of your budget, but the sound quality blows the Sony amp out of the water.

I've heard very good things about the Denon AVR-2105 (about 430 quid)...

loads of Denon AV amps on ebay...:D

stevem2k 11 February 2005 10:55 AM

Denon 2105 is £368 on kelkoo , you might pick up a 2805 with more searching about..

I love my 3300 , even though it's a few years old now.

Will that be enough to get a better sound than your 930? It might have more surround channels, but won't necessarily sound better. Or is your 930 broken?

scooby L 11 February 2005 11:03 AM

Another one worth watching (if the Yammi goes into orbit..:D)

The 930 is almost dead :(

bigsinky 11 February 2005 12:47 PM

my 940 is still going strong. have to admit i listened to a yamaha the other day and was well impressed, but again it was the flagship model and about 5 times your budget

I have a Pioneer VSX811X set up to run 7.1 and it's superb with movies, especially DTS  but I do miss my old Yamaha DSP A2070 for the surround music effects. Will audition others when it comes to changing, but I feel it will probably be a switch back to Yammi, I just love classical on the "church" setting and blues in the "jazz club". I also have an audiophile stereo amp for true music listening, before anyone slates me using an AV amp for music :(

Don't buy on spec or reviews ! Take some discs along to a good retailer and have a proper demo. Try to audition with both DD and DTS, but also listen to some music and see what it can do with that. Like I said, my Pio is pants at surround music :(

Good advice that. That's what I did, and for me the Denon blew away both my old Sony 930 and the Yammi and Pioneers I listened to. All down to personal taste I guess :)

scooby L 11 February 2005 02:04 PM

ditto,

my Denon mullered the Pioneer 814 I was comparing it to..

Aztec Performance Ltd 11 February 2005 02:11 PM

Yamaha is spot on. Havent tried the denon stuff though.

I've got a Denon 3803 and it rocks with my Kefs....;)

sammyh 12 February 2005 09:50 AM

Quite like the look of the Yamaha RXV 750 there's too many to choose from  going to buy some magazines today and read up :D

Iain Young 12 February 2005 09:53 AM

Looks nice, (I still prefer the Denon though ;)) but I'd definitely want to hear it for myself rather than depend on magazine reviews. Might also be worth heading on over to avforums, as there is a lot of good information and reviews on there...

I have the Denon avr2805 tis a good bit of kit.

kelvin 12 February 2005 11:21 AM

You really can't go too wrong with the majority of the current Denon Amps. I'd second a visit over to AV FOrums though - you're bound to find at least a few reviews of anything you're remotely interested in :)
