Memory for Tiny computers?

Hi,

My sis-in-law has a Tiny computer which only has 256MB of memory - and it's PC100 stuff - about 3 years old. Now I've seen some at Scan for about 21 squid a pop for a 256MB SIMM - with two of those she goes to the max. she can fit in. The box may well then run somewhat normally .....

BUT checked on the Crucial memory page and it has the usual 'these simms are guaranteed to work, other cheaper ones may not because of incompatible chips .. ' etc etc.

Does anyone know if *any old* cheapo pc100 memory will fit as the Crucial stuff is 2x the price?

Cheers

Dave

From my recollections of dealing with Tiny, they were never really sourcing decent parts themselves and just chucked in whatever they could get cheapest at the time so you'll probably be ok. If you're buying a pair, at least they'll work together and even if you have to drop the old one, you've still got an upgrade at the Crucial price, if they all work together that's even better.
The worst we saw was a batch of 10 machines and only three had identical parts.

Looks like I'll be getting the Scan stuff then ......

The crucial comments sound a little like scare tactics to get people to buy their brand of memory to me.

I'd just buy the stuff from Scan; never had any problems with their stuff. (Well except once many many years ago, and they swapped said item no questions asked).

I've previously mixed memory in old P2 PC100 spec PC's before with no probs.

Ram is Ram, there was a day when you could get parity and non-parity which caused a few glitches, but that was years ago and now that doesn't matter. As long as it's the same spec...PC100 in your case then there shouldn't be a problem. (famous last words...sods law does dictate that you always get the odd problem PC ;) )
