Do Dell Dimensions take "generic" memory?
Do you have to buy memory from Dell, or can you put any brand in ?
Its a couple of years old - Pentium IV 1.9GHz ? |
I think so. Manufacturers realised by limiting people to their spares they were loosing sales.
|
I think they use Kingston anyway.
|
ok, I'll check with Dell to be on the safe side

You can use generic memory...

Some motherboards are very fussy about RAM, so be careful. I bought some generic RAM from Aria and my PC wouldn't boot with it in at all. So I sent it back and a month (!) later got it swapped for another stick of the same - that wouldn't work either. So another month later I was finally given a credit note and spent a bit extra on some branded RAM which I'm awaiting delivery.

Got more ram for my dell laptop from Crucial - at about a third of the cost what dell charge
512mb SDRAM Dell - £75 +VAT + delivery Crucial - £28 delivered :thumb: |
About 3 years ago I wanted a 2nd 333MHz cpu for our Dell Poweredge server, don ask why . Dell wanted over £500, I found it on AUTdirect for just under £30 including a free power fan!!

I ordered 1Gb (2 * 512Mb) DDR400 from Crucial on Tuesday afternoon.
Arrived yesterday morning ! Amazing. |
Crucial memory comes from their factory in Scotland and they've never let me down with delivery.
The Dell Dimensions have always taken the crucial chips. I had loads of problems with their really old OptiPlexes and cheap generic stuff. Stefan |
I'll recommend www.crucial.com
The good thing is you can select your PC/laptop and get a compatible memory. |
