What turbo to upgrade to?
 

I'm the proud owner of a MY99 UK Turbo Wagon and want to upgrade my turbo for something with a bit more umph, and I'm just wondering would it be better to go for a TD05, or a VF30 Can anybody help me out? :norty: :cuckoo:

Cheers buddy, just seaching through them all now. Doesnt look like there is a great deal of differance between the two. What I seem to be gathering is that they both give more omph, except 1 seems to spool up a touch quicker, and the other gives a higher max output, both seem to be good upgrades. So I think its going to be down to personal choice. It would be great to find someone who's had experience with both and see how they compare.

Yeah. Mostly, you'll find that due to the nature of the turbine's compressor, there is no such thing as both high top-end and low lag. I personally subscribe to the low-lag school of thought. Massive top ends bore me to death and unless a straight patch of motorway is where you get your kicks, they are really worthless. In my view Imprezas were made to conquer the windy twisty roads of rally-like nature and surface, and in that context you'll be left for dead by a Civic Type-R if you're spending all your apexes waiting for the turbo to spool up.
If I was to get a new turbo, I'd aim for something with rolelr or ball bearings, as these are even faster to spool than the norm thrust variety bearings. I wonder if theres a possbility for a twin-scroll turbo too? That would well be worth it's money.

Would a legacy twin scroll turbo bolt straight on? because if they do, I'd love to try that out. :norty: :cuckoo:

Am right in saying my STi4 has a TD05 16g or vf34?

Looking to get 350/60, but dont want anything that takes too long to spool up, but need a turbo that will make use of the high rev limit.

vf34 you need then bud,but shop around first . .
you should be paying around £600 for it

i got 1 and its sitting in my mates house 75 miles away at the minute lol
but collecting it sunday :-)

18g td05's are now available from Forrest Racing Services, very reasonably priced.
a nice midway option for those who need more than a 16g, but dont fancy the full on 20g.

what does the 'g' mean? what is the difference between the 16, 18 and 20 g? And what are the early 90 degree entry TD05's, 16g or 18g or what?

Just to add, there are also two 16g's, large and small ! Subaru used the small one and the early Mitsubishi evo's used the large version.
