Tappety Noise from Exhaust Maniflod
 

from underneath the car as you are looking form the front of the car, the part of the exhaust manifold on the right side of the car is making this tapety/ticking noise at idle. I have checked the heatshields and there does not seem to be any loose. It sounds like its coming form inside it because when I covered this part of the manifold it muffled the sound. Its not very loud but is doing my head in as it doesnt sound too good. Its an sti2

sure its not the heatshields ticking away when it cools down ?can be heard quite noticeably when engine turned off after a longer run

Do you mean, like a sound of metal retracting after getting very hot, a cracking sound? Well its there when the car is running at idle and doesnt really sound like that.

get a length of garden hose, stick one end in your ear and slowly work your way around the right side of the engine, see if you can define if it's coming from the head or the block..
