Help needed with new build

I have just put together a new PC with some parts recommended on here. Thanks again guys!!

Heres the problem.... trying to install Windows XP home, I start the PC with the CD rom in, windows setup runs, copys some files and then says it is going to reboot and continue the setup. But it just keeps on doing this, if I remove the CD and reboot nothing happens. WOTF have I done wrong ?
SORTED THANKS :luxhello:

Also the light on the floppy drive is constantly lit from power up.
SORTED THANKS AGAIN :luxhello:

All help appreciated.

Is your hard drive being picked up when you boot? Id make sure in the BIOS the boot sequence is correct i.e cd-rom then hdd.

Simon.

A continually lit drive light usually signals a reversed connection to the floppy disk controller, so disconnect the cable and try again, check the bios ,under ide devices or hard disks etc and make sure the system can see the HDU and that it set as primary master , it could be your hard disk is set to AUTO SELECT and this is affected by which connector on the ide cable you plug into, this is an easy one to fix, look at the hard drive jumpers and set as master ,check the cd and hdu are on seperate cables as the cd could be set as the master and hdu as slave

Yes it sounds like it isn't booting from the hard drive. As Simon says sort out the boot order in the BIOS.

MadGrip 29 January 2005 04:17 PM

after the pc reboots and asks if you want to boot from cdrom, just leave it alone and let it continue the install, If you continuously start it from CDrom it will start the install procedure all over again

Cheers for the help peope. Hadn`'t set the HDD up as a boot device in the Raid setup.

But the floppy drive is still a problem. tried changing the cable and no joy also tried a new floppy drive and still no joy any more ideas ?

You do realise that the floppy drive cable goes in upside down, in comparison to the HDD and CD/DVD ?

MBScooby 30 January 2005 05:45 PM

The cable will only go in one way!

lightning101 30 January 2005 06:01 PM

What I mean is that at the motherboard end - it goes in the same as the other IDE cables, at the floppy drive end the cable is twisted, therefore goes in upside down in the back of the drive.

It's compulsary on building a computer to at first put the floppy cable in the wrong way around.:)

Turn it around at the floppy drive end as people have said!

Sorted :thumb:
How stupid do I feel :o

Don't feel stupid mate. I build computers for a living and still do that about 85%of the time :)

so...don't buy any computers from me :D

LOL... been there done that (several times).

In fact my office PC has had "no" floppy drive for the last 12 months since i built it, as i've never bothered taking it to bits to turn the cable round. :D

Yep I think everyone has done the floppy drive cable one and missed the WinXP F6 prompt for SATA drivers, at least one :)

I know I have :D
