Blobeye v Bugeye WRX
Does anybody know the reason why the blobeye has a bit more power pre PPP and a lot more power post PPP that the bugeye model?
Somebody told me blobeye has variable valve timing. Is this true? It certainly seems to rev a lot better than my old MY00. Just ordered PPP today so looking forward to the extra 40BHP! |
I know the Blobeye has AVCS aka VVT. Have a read here:
http://www.subaru.co.nz/Technical_La...hp?article=684 I Dont know about the bugeye though, but would be interested to know. |
Also Blobeye has no uppipe cat either which most probably helps.

JDM bug has AVCS, not the UK spec. IIRC that is the case with the blob too - didn't think the UK car has AVCS.
The post PPP power is mainly due to the better PPP - it runs off a prodrive ECUTEK map rather than the somewhat less precise ECU tweak originally used on the bugeye. I believe recently bugeyes can have the new style PPP fitted, and therefore get much more power than the same car with the old style PPP. I believe the ECU map was better as standard on the blobs as well. AFAIK, there is no significant difference between a full de-cat & ECUTEK'd bugeye and a full decat and ECUTEK'd blobeye; both with produce low 280s bhp at Power Engineering. This supports the idea that the difference is in the original exhaust and map. |
Im sure if you go and buy a ppp for a bugeye you now get the 260 bhp version
and agreed with Hades, these cars are very simular |
UK blob eyes have a cat in the up pipe, they do not have variable valve timing in WRX form,STI has a type of VVT JASON

Oops just re read what I posted in context. I knew Bugs didn`t have avcs wasn`t sure about the blob. If you look on the website the the PPP has a differant part number between the two cars so should think it is differant, unless they have not updated the website.

the PPPs (if you were to have an 01 done now) produced the same output on both cars (265ps), it used to be 245 when it first came out for the bugeye and was a piggyback ecu, not a tek remap as it is now.

The 01/02 bug WRX and the 03/04 blob WRX run essentially the same spec engine, including cats in the uppipes.
01 and 02 bugs run the same ECU althought most of the 01's have an inferior map as std which can be prone to hesitation and overfueling. The 03 onwards blob has a different spec ECU which as standard has a better map in it and some nice extras such as the ability to run gear dependant boost control  The end result from a tuned/remapped 01-04 WRX will be very similar. Cheers chaps
So basically the same motor with different ecu on blobeye cars giving the slight power gain. Does the PPP remove the upcat then? Thought it was just Ecutek, back box and some different intercooler hosing? |

The WRX PPP gets rid of the third cat on first part of the centre section. The up-pipe cat stays in place - other thsn that it is as you state. Prodrive may take issue over your description of the ECU change though. Nick |
Cheers Nick
How do you find the PPP on your wagon? How noticeable is the difference? Looking forward to getting back the Scooby growl! |
while we are on this subject,is it possible to buy the ppp ecutek map through a mapper like andy.f or is it unique to prodrive, reason i ask is that i will be getting a remap soon for my 01 bugeye and didn't want to go all out for power,i already have a prodrive exhaust and have just replaced the intercooler to turbo pipes with samco hoses and would just like it round about 265-270bhp.i didn't want to go down the route of having to have a knock sensor ect.

This is a "one fits all" map that is conservative enough to be fitted to any car, taking account of production tolerances. You can also have a custom map optimised to your particular car (commonly termed Tek3) This is a similar price and should release a few more bhp with the same safety margin and does not require a separate knock sensor. The PPP makes a lot of whistling and blowing noises and the exhaust has developed with age (20k miles) into a nice note - trouble is I've got used to the straight line push and it feels tame. That's not the case around corners so Eibach springs are on the list later in the year. I cannot praise the PPP brakes enough (ecept when new as the ABS went off too easily)- they are so right for the car (or for me) though I have almost run out of road coming up to the occasional corner.
