John Felstead's Nurburgring DVD

Dunno if I'm repeating what's already been said before, but I watched Felly's Nurburgring DVD last night and all I can say is...awesome.

For those of you who don't know what I'm on about, it's a superb insight into the famous German racetrack taken from many camera angles (forward and rear and in and out of the car) in John's own Subaru Impreza STi5 Type RA.

The driving is extremely good as John wipes the floor with everything in sight, even some serious bikes, and the engine sound from the front grille mounted camera is almost better than porn!

If you want to see how your car CAN be driven, then look no further, and it's amazing to think that John's car is pretty much standard, and not some massive horsepower beast, but with good brakes, good suspension and a proper driver, it just shows that some serious stuff can be left embarrassed.

There's a really informative commentary from John on one of the laps about the details of the circuit as he goes round.

I thoroughly enjoyed it an would recommend it to anyone. So much so, that I've now asked John if we can stock it for him.

If you like Subarus, you'll enjoy it for sure.

Rich

That is exactly what I found when I took my (then) totally standard 2003 WRX on track. First hour - a bit ropey and was gonna call it a day. Second hour with instructor - much much better and I was amazed at what the car could do, especially after reading on Scoobynet about it being slagged off all the time.

Not had it on track since but I felt one thing - the car was very much better than me as a driver and I aimed to drive better - although that hasn't stopped me s[pending £****'s on mods etc ;)

:norty:

I agree - it is essential viewing and shows you the awesome Nurburgring at its most challenging, yet John makes it look easy.

Tony

Just to make it clear he means John's CAR horn just in case people get the wrong idea about what kind of DVD this is.

;)

alcazar 21 January 2005 05:49 PM

Does it feature the lap recorded where the sound wasn't very good, so John overdubbed it with a rock track from a group he knew?
That's really atmospheric.

to think that John's car is pretty much standard
wrxmania, I beg to differ! johns car, which he sold quite a while ago now, was far from standard! :)
rebuilt uprated engine for a start, I think it may have been remapped, very highly uprated and extremely well set-up suspension :)
Its owned by alan c from the midlands now, saw him spin it in derbyshire once :)

totally agree with the nurby dvd comments though, excellent filming, nearly as good as all of mine.

chris.

dualtech 21 January 2005 06:49 PM

Thanks Chris..............go on tell every body

Lol

I think the engine was standard when John made the DVD, brakes and suspension were the only mods.

Sends a shiver down my spine when I see the rev counter being held at 8000 rpm

Eh?!??!? :freak3:

I never said John's car was standard - I don't even know it. That was a quote from the original poster of this thread. I only spoke of my own car being standard. The text in quote marks at the top of my reply was a quote - not my words :norty:

johnfelstead 22 January 2005 04:51 AM

Thanks Rich, it's great to see the DVD being enjoyed so much :)

The DVD features that lap Alcazar, but we have used it as a basis for the 2nd detailed graphics lap with full comentary, so the music isnt as per the video hosted on my website. Theo produced the original music on that, which is superb, as you say very atmospheric.

When the footage was filmed, the engine and gearbox was standard STi5 TypeRA Limited spec, so it has approx 276BHP and the higher 5th gear of the Limited, with the close ratio 1st to 4th gear of the normal RA. The car still had its OEM exhaust and Cat, with a scoobymania backbox. Suspension is Leda coilovers, whiteline ARB's, ALK, powerstation bumpsteer mod and geometry setup at Prosport. The brakes are AP Racing 330mm 4 pots front with standard 2 pot rear, braided hoses. It's running on 215/40x17 Bridgestone SO2 PP tyres.

As they say, power is nothing without control, in the DVD you get to see how a well setup Impreza with its stock 8000rpm STi engine can be exploited on the most challenging circuit there is.

Tiny 22 January 2005 08:36 AM

Nice to see you @ Oulton today John, hope that you have warmed up by now, it was bl**dy cold.

This DVD is a must have if you are considering a ring trip, even if you have been before imho as it helps just watching the laps to 'learn' a little of the track.

johnfelstead 22 January 2005 05:05 PM

Thanks chaps. :)

Yep, just about thawing out now, thanks to RRH for the loan of the coat and gloves! :D

Hit the pause button every so often Tiny and it might be doable. :D
