Panasonic Plasma TH42-PW7B

I am looking at upgrading to a plasma...and until now not seen one I like the quality of, until this one caught my eye in Birmingham...

It is only a presentation screen...so no tuner or speakers..but that is fine, as I play all my sound through my AV amp, and I only watch sky or dvd's..

My question is...does anyone else have one of these? and if so...have they used the progressive scan terminal board, or just got scart boards installed..

Also...I do not want to wall mount it...so can anyone recommend a reasonably prices glass AV cabinet for it to sit on?

Cheers

Kyle

hi. just bought a panasonic Viera, IIRC the plasma your looking at is just a monitor. (as you say no speakers etc etc) but its the same screen as the viera so very good quality....

to be honest cant really answer your questions. I did look at that telly but the optional boards (scart etc) was giving me a headache

www.av-sales.co.uk do the best deals on the net I can find.

for more info on plasmas go to www.avforums.com

cheers Dave.

I looked at the Viera ...£2200 I think the cheapest one it at the mo....loved the TV, and yes it is the generation 7 screen in that too....(also in the Bang & Olufen generation 5)
trouble is I want a glass cabinet and pedestal, and do not perticularly like the Viera stand/cabinet...

Found a site cheaper than AV sales.. £1550 inc VAT & delivery..but the boards are £161 each..

I've got the PW6 (the model before the PW7), with a single scart and progressive scan boards (one of each).

You can notice the difference between the picture quality of each, but note that you do need a progressive scan dvd player to output a compatible signal.

Got mine wired up through the av amp now using the progressive scan component video inputs / outputs and the picture is superb :D. Definitely better than the scart input...

davegtt 18 January 2005 04:35 PM

yeah we only plummed for the 37" though in the end. £2000 the viera does come with a pedastal stand too so it'll sit on a glass cabinet of your choice..... well worth a look IMO.

So you run your video as well as your sound through your AV amp?...right, need to get my head round that one..as I only run sound through mine, with scart to scart connections running direct from dvd(& Sky+ box) to TV.

My Denon 2800 DVD player has progressive scan outputs, Sky only has scart plus RCA, so an RCA lead from my Sky to my amp, and then SVideo (or progressive?) leads to the plasma....

That is a nice looking TV mate.... what CRT did you upgrade from? I am worried about the 37" not looking much bigger than the 32" CRT I currently have..

That's correct. The sky box, xbox, dvd recorder, dvd player, gamecube etc all go into my amp and there's a single component output going to the plasma. It means that you can change from one device to another at the single click of a button (because the audio and video changes at the same time).

I've found it's surprising how quickly you get used to the size of a 42" and start thinking it looks a bit small ;)

:D :D :D

So...all I would need it one component terminal box, and let my amp do all the control...

Iain Young 18 January 2005 05:02 PM

That's what I do :)

what would scooby do 18 January 2005 05:08 PM

Don't forget to future proof your purchase by making sure it supports hdcp via a compatible DVI port or HDMI. All future high definition broadcasts and blue ray (that will replace DVD) require this :D

The PW6, PW7 and Viega's all are HDMI ready (just need boards for the PW's)

You wouldn't be saying that if you saw my wiring :D

davegtt 18 January 2005 05:54 PM

I upgraded from a 28" flat wide screen TV..... the viera is HUGE, mainly becuase the surround of the plasma is so big makes the screen look way bigger (we originally looked at 42") most of the plasmas have a small casing so other 37" tellys might actually look smaller than the viera

Defo recommended though. you could always buy the 37" and if you think its too small just return it ;) lol

The HDMI terminal board has actually been withdrawn for the PW7 series - possibly to be revised.

Yeah they'll do that ;) To be fair it probably will be revised - the board was due for release in December but the spec wasn't quite what it should have been so more than likely will be revised at some point although I'm not sure if this will be in time for the PW7.

ScoobyJawa 18 January 2005 10:19 PM

I've got a PW6 and its fooking ace :D

scooby L 21 January 2005 08:37 AM

Right,

Cheers for all the advice guys,

dave, I went to look at the 37" Viera, and was very impressed :D, so surfed until I found a cheap one....and then saw this on the dealers offers page.....doh

http://www.webelectricals.co.uk/cgi-...ducts/1051&2D2

So ordered a black one...

Iain, I think I am correct in thinking that I need component leads from dvd-amp and amp-plasma, and s-video connection from amp-plasma for the sky?

Bring on Wednesday...whoo hoo... :D

davegtt 21 January 2005 09:06 AM

lol.. congratulations, the plasma youve got and the viera aint much different to be honest. you should really enjoy it, Im sticking ours on the wall over the weekend. hoping its not gonna look to big and close to the sofa

scooby L 21 January 2005 09:30 AM

Intestingly the 37" Viera in Powerhouse was sharper than the 42" Viera, but it was hard to tell, as they were playing different source's...

davegtt 21 January 2005 09:46 AM

yes you will always get a better picture with the smaller plasma.... you do sacrifice some PQ for a bigger set..... not that noticeable as you say on the better models :)

How much was the Viera in Powerhouse?

Well, in my setup I've got a scart->component lead for the sky box, component->component for my two dvd players, svideo for the xbox and gamecube, and a component->component for the connection between the amp and tv. Seems to work well :)

Cheers Iain, when you say component..u mean the seperate colour y, c etc cables..not the left/right/video jack plugs.. correct?
