Rough Justice : thief run over and killed by victim

Amsterdam, 17-01-05

A 43 year old woman motorist gave chase and knocked down two criminals on a scooter who had just stolen her bag whilst she sat in traffic on Monday evening. The thieves opened her car door and snatched the bag.

One of the criminals, a 19 year old lad, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car driver has been detained.

My verdict : unlucky for the thief. Certainly won't be doing it again!

Good. One less scum!

Hope she doesn't get in trouble!

Suresh, please can you keep us updated on the legal side, if you hear anything?

OT1H I can't say I grieve for the loss of a criminal, but OTOH death for nicking a handbag is a bit harsh - not sure attacking someone with a car and killing them comes under the UK definition of "reasonable force". Curious to see how the Dutch handle it.

This happened a couple of year back over here. Some scrote kept stoning cars coming out of a street populated by people from 'the other side.' Some housewife with a bunch of kids in the car lost the plot when he stoned her car for about the 10th consecutive time and went after him. He fell off his bicycle and she flattened him. I think she got done for manslaughter

Brendan Hughes 18 January 2005 10:08 AM

Stoning a car - multiple times - is a feck sight more dangerous than snatching a bag. I'd say she was almost right to do it.

Suresh 18 January 2005 10:53 AM

Update: The guy reportedly died pinned to a tree by the car is what is being described as a 'tragic accident'.

The scooter had apparently been used in other similar crimes...

Jap2Scrap 18 January 2005 10:55 AM

'tragic accident'
Tragic? Not really.
Accident? Doesn't sound like much of an accident.

Spot on then.

Brendan Hughes 18 January 2005 11:07 AM

What's the death of GWB punchline? "It wouldn't be an accident and it wouldn't be a great loss either" :D

Leslie 18 January 2005 11:09 AM

I bet she gets "done" for it. Think they have even more lefty Roman sandal wearers who hate cars oiver there.

On a side note...I can bet that the scooter riders - if they were wearing a helmet at all didn't have the straps done up. Or worse wearing those useless skullcaps. Which almost certainly contributed to their deaths.

It's an increasing fashion amongst the stupid population (which is pretty much every single moped rider on the road across the planet :D ) Just to stick the helmet straight on and not bother with the straps.

Also most riders on the continent wear skull caps (Skid lids, chome domes, salad bowls etc..can't remember what their true name is :D in other words open faced and side helmet). Which all they do is stop your brains leaking out after a crash.

Anyway...good on the woman for chasing the theives :thumb:

Ali, as you appear to know, what is the status in the UK of riding a bike with a horsey helmet? (Apart from the fact that you look an utter t!t.) Seems quite common in Portugal, I'm sure it's totally illegal.

ALi-B 18 January 2005 11:36 AM

I haven't a clue, but I've seen the conseqences of wearing them after witnessing a crash in Spain...not a pretty site :(

All I know is Helmet laws across Europe are nowhere near as strictly enforced as in the UK, well, it doesn't appear to be at the least.

Victim released!

Good news!! The woman concerned was set free this evening. :) :)

The Dutch judge ruled in a preliminary hearing that she had not intended to kill anyone when she reversed her car after the thieves, who were making their getaway on a scooter. Local wags have commented that it was obviously an accident as everyone knows that women can't reverse properly anyway...

She remains a suspect in the case, whatever that means.

A further development in the case was that the dead man, identified as Ali B. had served 5 months on remand last year as an armed robbery suspect, but charges were dropped when his brother (conveniently) came forwards with an alibi.

Hopefully justice will prevail and she can begin to get on with her life.

I never spotted it. That's funny! :D
What's even worse though is that there is yet another Ali B. out there (pronounced Arlee Bay), who is a famous young Dutch rapper. He dresses like a an Ali G. parody in bright yellow shell sits + matching baseball cap. Bless.
