How to adapt my car for rallying?
Okay folks, I've had enough of mucking about at trackdays and have thoughts of single venue tarmac rallies.
Question is, what would I need to do to my car? It's a Renault 5 GT Turbo, built by Renault motorsport for the 5 Turbo race series, later was used in super coupe championship. It has a full cage, plumbed in extinguisher (done last year and in line with current regs for circuit racing) battery cut offs (internal and external) two sparco race seats with harnesses. Brake discs and pads are all race spec (mintex pads) and the suspension is spax adjustable all round (very low!) The car has never been road registered. It passed scrutineering for a race at Thruxton last year when we hired it out. Does anyone out there know what else I would have to do to it to be able to use it for rallying??? |
I've a pdf copy of the rules and regs floating about somewhere i'll try and dig out....your car sounds pretty close at the moment right enough. What series are you wanting to rally in?

Have a look at the MSA website. MSA website here.
Find your local motorclubs and see which ones have people doing stage rallying. Pop along and have a chat, they'll be someone wiling to guide you through the regs. Download the licence application form and send off for a non-race national B licence, the one you'll need for rallying. When that arrives it'll include the blue book, section K has the rules for rallying I think. Sounds like you've got the car pretty well sorted. Once you're 100% happy you're in line with the regs then you'll need a log book before you can compete. There's a list of scrutes who can do this in with the licence as well. |

Sounds like it's pretty much there. Of course race and rally regs can be different, so you will need to double check with the Blue Book to make sure you meet the rally regs. You will need sumpguards on it for rallying, unless you've got them already. You will need an intercom system so you can hear the pace notes. Your nav will appreciate a proper footrest. Depending on what events you do you might require spots (and more beefy alternator to power them). Is it logbooked already? If not you will have to get that done.

you need to get in tuch with dvla to reg it they will put you right it has to be road reg plus you need an mot if you start with single venue you don`t need tax or ins
the blue book will put you right on your car you need a comp lisence you can get one from msa but you have to do a test now it beats trackdays cost a bit more but you soon no who`s quick in your class and who you need to beat most of all its great fun good luck if you need to no more i`ll try and help |

You need to find out how the bodyshell was prepped; was it seam welded? If it has been properly seam welded you are still going to need to strengthen the body; finding an Escort strenghening kit isnt too difficult but finding a Renault one might be.....
As suggested; start with the MSA Blue Book and take it from there. Simon |
Dont forget it will need a restrictor fitting within 50mm of the turbo ,reducing the 180bhp by a lot! BTW who drove your car at Thruxton mine was used by Neil Mcgrath

obvious thing your missing (i think) is a roll cage??? safety devices do them to the required standards/regulations at very reasonable prices.....
suprised your going to rally it. doing it yourself? you have a very rare and desirable car there mate, dont go wrecking it ;) |
