Bicycles - Price Fixing ?

I want to buy a Bicycle, a mountain bike.

The brand im looking to buy is a TREK 4500 Retail price is £399.00
I've spoken to a number of stockists, and I get the impression they are to scared of loosing there TREK franchise than sell a bike with a discount.
Am I correct in this statement? or am I not trying hard enough.

Is there a cheap place online to buy a TREK 4500 ????

Don't you want anyone else to make a living? Instead of asking for a discount perhaps try asking for a free additional piece of equipment or a free 6 month tune up.

Well i think TREK are now taking the P1ss. Ive just looked on the web (america) and you can buy the same bike over there (New York) for half the price that you can over here.
But Guess what, TREK America will not allow its dealers to sell over the Internet and a bike can only be purchased in its store.

Guess i will start looking at other makes.

Here is a link for the Trek 4500 with Disc's for $550 (£292)

Yep - was not prepared to be ripped off over here and bought a Specialized full sus MTB back with me from Miami once. The bike was cheaper in dollars than it was in pounds - ohh and they made a nice living selling it to me too !

Just sold it 4 years later for just under what I paid :)

So it's not just Trek who are price fixing then?
What makes you think the Yanks won't do it? The Japs have been doing "pounds for dollars" for as long as I can remember: I've recently looked at a Sony part which was £130 here. Guess what? $110 in the USA!!!!!!!!

Have a look at some British bikes: Orange, Saracen, even Halfords own brand, "Carrera", Claud Butler, Raleigh. Orange are particularly well thought of, and if owt goes wrong, they are in Halifax and do seem to care.

Not sure on Raleigh now, mine is a titanium one from them, about 7years ago, and well worth what I paid: the previous year's model, so I got it for less than the FRAME was worth!:)

Just reread my original post and the retial price for the bike over here with front and rear disks is £499 not the £399 that i stated.
And the American price is correct at $550 (£292)
