MY99 TMI swap question.

Can I swap theTMI in a MY 99 with one from a classic STi? and does it provide the potential to produce performance gains?

Many thanks.

Hi

Yes you can fit a STI v5 or v6. V5 will bolt straight on( slight adjustment to brackets) and V6 with a dump valve adaptor pipe.

Yes there are performance gains

straight swap

no adjustments needed. Its a straight swap.

If you've not done it already fit a set of Samco turbo hoses, the majority of the gains to be had in the STi TMICs is to do with the cast metal Y-pipe rather than the intercooler core.

The endtanks are slightly larger which gives a marginal increase in flow potential but we're talking 2 or 3% nothing significant.

Depends on your power goals. If your quite std (de-cat + filter) then it'll probably not be of benefit as the std i/c should be fine. If you have increased boost then its worth changing the Y pipe for either the STi item or Samco.

Not sure exactly when the std i/c becomes inefficent, but I would use the STi item for upto around 330bhp.

Oh....and the STi one is nice and shiney too! ;)

I am running a MY00 producing approx 265bhp (same torque). Have looked into it myself and have come to the conclusion that swapping would simply not be worth it. I do have Samco turbo hoses though which are a big improvement.

Agree with Bob and 7 foot. Not worth the effort or cost. Uprate the pipes to Samco or metal Y piece or newer WRX/STI7/8 TMIC for better gains.

oooops,just noticed this lol
soooooo, basically,if im aiming for around 310 bhp
then i may as well stick with wot i got
ie,my00 uk
but,if i did get a better 1 then 1 off an sti6 would be a piece of wee to fit
and would improve things marginally ?

cheers 4 reply bob
sorry to take so long lol

Depends how much you can get the STi6 item for. The STi7/8 may not be much more ££'s

STi 5/6 I/C go for around £150-200
STi 8 I/C go for around £230-£350

Personally I purchased a STi 5/6 I/C when looking for similar goal.

I believe Peanuts ran 340bhp+ on his and Carl ran 300bhp on his (not sure if Carls was earlier type). I know a few people now running STi5/6 i/cs at that sort of output.

There's about £100 difference between the 2 I/Cs but the STi8 one does require a bit of work to fit and should have a new scoop/undertray fitted (so that adds more £££)

If you plan on doing any further mods it will be worthwhile looking at STi8 i/c or FMIC.
