Uneven wear with new pads
Now that my brake line's been sorted, I've been able to bed in some new EBC pads.
With the car not being used in the past 3 weeks, there was a lot of surface rust on the discs, but I noticed that the pad material wasn't covering the whole disc surface. When I fitted the new pads, I had to elongate the holes for the split pins to fit into the Godspeed kit. I wasn't sure just how loose the pads should be in the pins, so I'm wondering if they are sticking causing them to angle inwards at the top of the caliper. Blimey, is that only three weeks rust, looks like 6 months worth to me, I'd have thought that it would take an awful lot to get the pins to 'bind', try driving, and coasting to a halt, then see if the discs are vaguely warm, that might tell you if they're binding!

OK, went for a coast down the street and the discs were stone cold. Took the car for a spin (up to 80mph) and coasted down some backroads without touching the brakes.
Once again discs were stone cold. Took the car for a blast and used the brakes a bit heavier than normal. Then I took the car for a serious blast and used the brakes pretty hard, Took another pic and you can see that the rusty area is starting to get some pad material now.

Mate, if you think about the shape of the pad, the inner edge is square, so therefore there is actually very little pad that touches the inner edge of the disc, so therefore that factor plus the fact that there's no piston pushing directly on that part of the pad equates to your problem, not that it really is a problem, clearly with use they wear a little and then they'll get to the disc.

That's what I was beginning to think. Just wanted to check that it wasn't something I'd done wrong whilst fitting the new pads.

I have the same kit and suffer the same problem. I take it bit of wire wool and remove the rust first before taking it for as spin. Messy but effective. My pads do wear unevenly with the outside part wearing for the reasons RON has stated. Hope this helps. Also, I drill the new holes in the pads and then fill the old part with chemical metal and then re drill. Helps with the pins holding the pads correctly and stops rattle. |
