Which Motul oil?

Which Motul for WRX03, 10-40 or 15-50?

Andy.

Dave R 02 January 2005 03:05 PM

Motul 300V Competition whatever grade that is.

AndyMoody 02 January 2005 03:22 PM

15-50 from what it says on the tin !!

JIM THEO 02 January 2005 06:10 PM

I changed from RS 10W/60 to V300 10W/40 for the winter and fell that 15W/50 is extreme for middly modified engines espacially with those very low ambients.

AndyMoody 02 January 2005 06:27 PM

OK Jim........I'm currently using Castrol RS 10-60 but since finding out it isn't a true synthetic I'm not going to use it next time. My car is standard and I don't intend to mod it or do track use so I'd have thought 15-50 would be OK. Mobil 1 Motorsport is also 15-50 too so that is also another possibility.

Any idea if Motul stuff is easily available in Calais area or cheaper as I pop across for the occasional booze cruise!!!!!!! Mobil 1 used to be for my old 306 GTI6.

Andy.

JIM THEO 02 January 2005 07:17 PM

Most of the engine wear "happens" the first few minutes of start up (more than 50-60%) so IMO change to 10W/40 for the winter and 15W/50 for the summer, Motuls can be mixed except the 5W/40 viscosity.
JIM

I also own WRX03 and found the car has lower oil temps with the Motul and lower oil pressure, we'll see if it starts to burn more oil than the usual 300-500ml per 5000km.

scoobyDAZZA 03 January 2005 04:04 PM

getting mine done with 15/50 next time cuz 'bob' told me to , lol .

oilman 03 January 2005 04:33 PM

Personally I would use the 300V 5w-40 or 10w-40 tops for winter use.

Cheers
Simon

ive just had my 03sti serviced and took the main dealer 5ltres of 300V 10W/40 fully synth to replace the magnatec they put in.

Castrol RS 10-60 not synthetic?
I have been using this oil for 4 years !
Where did this revelation come from?

oilman 04 January 2005 09:06 AM

It came from chemical analysis of the product that I commissioned in May 04.

It contains Group 3 basestocks (hydrocracked) and not Group 4 or 5 (PAO/Ester).

That of course doesn't make it a 'bad' oil tho.

True, other than the grade being too thick it is not what they say it is, and it is not what you pay for.

Oilman has persuaded me to change to Motul 300v 10-40 for my new 2.5 motor, although the old 2l block looks to have lived very well on Castrol RS 10-60 for most of its 88k miles at 300bhp-ish.

I got mine from Alyn at AS Performance (posts here as Stockcar) for a very good price and next-day delivery. Order 10l at a time - it comes in 2l tins - to save on postage and it works out CHEAPER than Castrol/Mobil.

Alyn is on 0191 410 3770. No connection etc other than as a happy customer :)

Shame on you, all that advice and no sale!

Too thick for what.... a standard subaru engine (think this has been done to death now). So you are saying Castrol are selling something which they claim is something and actually isn't. Maybe you should take them to court over this, or maybe they will take you to court over what you have just said ;) . Want to eleborate on exactly what they specifically claim and what you are saying is untrue. Presume its something to do with 'It contains Group 3 basestocks (hydrocracked) and not Group 4 or 5 (PAO/Ester).' But do they claim it is Ester based.... don't believe they do.

I still wouldn't hesitate to put Castrol in my engine. I'm currently on Motul (having swapped about abit over the last 5 years or so i've had this ca) but have noticed the general engine noise is less (as logged via the OEM sensor via my Apexi PFC) with Castrol than Motul.....

:sound of penny dropping:

Simon, YHM ;)

Too thick for an engine where 5w-30, 5w-40, 10w-30 or 10w-40 is specified and you'll find many posts of mine explaining why using an oil that's too thick is not a good idea but I'm happy to post the reasons again should you wish to see them.

With regards to the fact it's not a proper synthetic well no it isn't as it's a hydrocracked mineral oil not a group IV or V true synthetic. Yes, Castrol won the right in court to call these highly refined oils "synthetic" but they are not the same thing other than by name and are certainly not the same quality and this is the whole point here - Why pay synthetic prices for something that is not when you can get the real thing for the same price? I think it's called "marketing", perfectly legal and they are doing nothing wrong here but isn't it better to be informed when making a choice!

Cheers
Simon ;) :)

Same findings here Tone, although I changed again from Castrol RS back to Motul V300 10W/40 and currently believe it or not the noise is exactly the same, who knows, mystery!
Actually I am going to use 10W/40 for the winter and 15W/50 for the summer, our ambients are of the highest in Europe though!

Yes Simon, but how many times have we been over the fact these oils are specified for the standard engine. One that has to endure the shopping run etc. What about a 450bhp engine with different rods, pistons and maybe crank.... that goes on no short journeys etc. Would you still recommend them. Of all the high power subarus i know most run oils out of the recomended range. Are they wrong to do so. Castrol RS has been used in some of these.... clever marketing maybe but it seems to do the job.

Can i ask how what oils you run in your Subaru?

Tony.

lol!

The oil temperature which Motul 300V 5W-40 Power etc can withstand, I honestly REALLY doubt that it EVER reaches that point, It breaks earlier :-)

oilman 06 January 2005 03:17 PM

I don't have a Subaru but if I did I'd use an ester based 5w-30 or 5w-40.

Cheers
Simon
