Help with differences between wagon and sedan in classic shape.

What are the differences as per title especially with regards to the weight distribution and handling side of the two vehicles?

aAso I would like to know the differences with regards to the UK and the JDM specification vehicles.

Is it true that there is a slight rear bias on the wagons? I was led to believe this a while back, is this rumour or is there fact beind this?

I have done a search and I am coming up with not a lot. :( :o

Many thanks in advance.

Wagons are better!!!! LOL

I think you'd have to be a pretty discerning driver to notice a "slight rear bias" of any weight.
I can only imagine that this would be because of the tailgate and longer roof.

As far as I know, the wagon and saloon are mechanically the same (UK cars) and I think the JDM cars had power differences when we talk about Sti models. I think wagons were 240bhp when saloons were 276bhp. Lots of different models and variations, so there will be exceptions.

I think the V5 & V6 Sti wagons were 276bhp too.

In actual fact....globally, the wagon outsold the saloon!!

Wagons rule!!!! :)

PTMW may be best for you here, i think there may also be a difference in the rear springs, but i may be corrected on that :)

The engine has a smaller turbo (TD 04) that spools-up quicker and produces the torque sooner than a saloon.
The man to talk to is GC8, he is a very knowledgeable person.
I asked a question about why my JDM WRX Wagon feels like it has more power than is published and he sent me this reply :-

"The 'Wagon doesnt have more torque; it less actually, 280 Nm as opposed to 304 Nm/309 Nm for a '93/'94 saloon. There are two factors which make the torgue feel fatter; firstly the 'Wagon has a smaller faster spooling TD04 turbo, the saloon has the larger TD05. More importantly the 'Wagon is mapped differently; the 280 Nm of torque peaks at 3500 Rpm whereas peak torque on a TD05 equipped saloon is at 5000 Rpm; the lower the torque is the fatter it feels and the more noticable it is.

Saloon; November 1994

Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 260 ps (191.23 kw) / 6500 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 31.5 kg*m (308.91 N*m) / 5000 rpm
Power density 4.73

'Wagon: October 1993

Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 220 ps (161.81 kw) / 6000 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 28.5 kg*m (279.49 N*m) / 3500 rpm
Power density 5.82 "

I told you he was knowledgeable !!

I don't know if its true but I was told that the wagon has a stiffer rear bodyshell to compensate for the tailgate and stiffer springs for the increase in payload. They really do handle well in the twisties.

uk wise the saloon was 35kgs lighter 1235kgs wagon was 1270kgs

wagon was suppose to have a little more weight at the back and slightly more noisy

Didn't Wagons have lower overall gearing as they were "meant" to be load carriers, as well as said above re: TD04, etc.

But Wagons also seemed to handle better, but lost out on some JDM std bits like alloy front wishbones.

Anyway, you can always fit later suspension and TD05 and get a remap if it doesn't suit your tastes!

[QUOTE=Big-G]The engine has a smaller turbo (TD 04) that spools-up quicker and produces the torque sooner than a saloon.

Does this apply to UK wagons or just imports?

chrisp 27 December 2004 09:05 PM

all wagons and saloons from my97 had the td04

Turbo info

Have a look at the above link. Make's for interesting reading. Got a VF22 in mine. Good for 400bhp :) however the down side to this the intercooler is perhaps a tad on the small side at the moment.

The wagon offers the practicalitys of an estate with the performance of the sadans (saloon) Just how many cars can you load with a bed mattress and still have the performance of a supercar.

Hmmmm, thanks for the replies people, it has and hasn't answered my question.....

It is the weight distribution side and whether it causes an effect of a rear biased on the classic wagons.....also would be interested if this was carried through to the MY01 onwards? There is talk about an overall 60/40 effect (exaggerated I know think) that gives the wagon the edge over the sedan.
I also know that the Impreza was initially designed as a five door, not a four door, that came afterwards.....

I have driven a stock wagon, stock sedan and a stock sedan with DCCD and the wagon was tipping to be the best handler out of all three. The DCCD sedan "felt" the best, nevertheless, I was more used to driving sedans....

I was hoping that PTMW! would answer but I am sure he is taking a well earned break over Christmas. I think JF would be an excellent person to tap into information wise too.

Any more takers? Are there specifications that show the overall weight distribution and then over a 50/50 split front to rear?

BTW Rokay, MRT are just down the road from where I am working at the moment.
