Brake Upgrade
 

Hi,

I own a MY2002 WRX Sti (series 7) which I have just had upgraded with a TSL 333 package. Great car but the brakes let it down big time under tough track or hard road useage. I would like to rectify this issue.

I checked out Prodrive who offer a 330mm package but then refer you to the Subaru site which in turn fails to list the option. Does anyone know how much it costs and indeed how effective it is?

Alternativley, are there other packaged options (buy the box, give it to a good garage for fitting etc) with proven track records?

AP 6 pots are the best - they're the mutts nutz - about £1700 though

prodrive kit is about £ 1400 ex VAT think its part ALCON.

It's still on the subaru site here. If that doesn't take you straight there then follow Acessories, Impreza, WR Sport, Prodrive Brake Conversion.

Before you go the Alcon route, check out how much the single piece discs cost from a main dealer compared to having to buy just disc (seperate 2 piece disc and bell assembly on the APR kits).

There isnt much wrong with the calipers you have, id suggest speaking to someone at AP and getting a change of pad and going for a disc/bell conversion (plus braided hoses etc).

Tony- Spot on mate!

Drhildr- It won't be the calipers that are letting you down; Brembos are very good indeed. Don't waste your money going for complete kits, it's most likely that you have OE pads, which aren't up for track day or real fast road use. Consider some decent compitition/fast road pads e.g. Pagid's 4.2.1 and get some braided hoses. If you must upgrade your discs, look for grooved only as cross drilled may crack under track conditions.

Just a small point to add alot of people on here seem to forget the importance of decent brake fluid.I used to do rallying some years ago,had loads of problem with brake fade etc,changed fluid to Castrol racing all problems cured one of the best mods we done to the car Jason

Jason, very true mate, gotta look at the whole package; relatively cheap components of an upgrade can seriously undermine the effectiveness of the more expensive stuff if they aren't attended too. I guess it'd be like talking about engine internals and neglecting to mention the oil! :-)

i had the prodrive brakes on my p1-expensive and quite fadey after heavy use expensive discs and pads,i would recommend ferodo ds2500 pads , uprated fluid,goodridge hoses-seems to do my tsl 333 ok

As an after thought, and specifically with this in mind, AP Racing are releasing a disc & pad conversion for the Brembo STi setup. They are just assembling them at the moment so will be available in the new year.

It consists of a disc and bell set-up with uprated pads, there will be a range of pads available.
Consequently thereafter, you can buy just pads or discs (without the bells) to keep ongoing costs down.
