WR1 fried clutch at 3,000 miles guuuulp

A local guy runs a WR1 near me and has fried the clutch after around 3,000 miles. Its not seen the drag strip that I know of. Must have had some pretty hard launches though...........

Jay m A 21 December 2004 08:49 AM

Ex demo? :D

CustomScoobyIOM 21 December 2004 08:51 AM

I did mine. Subaru didn't replace it as they said it was a 'wear and tear' item.

I drove it hard, but hey you are meant to.

Ended up putting an aftermarket clutch in. That also didn't smell.

Gangsta Smurf 21 December 2004 09:29 AM

to get these beasts off of the line fast you pretty much have to dump the clutch. For it to go after 3000 miles it must have seen some serious action. I've done 15000 miles in my WR1 and it's been driven hard - clutch is going along nicely.

Advice from EVO handbook must apply to Scoob as well it says "engage clutch fully before applying full power". Frankly can't wait to wreck the clutch in my STi8 so I can get away quickly without the awful smell. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't smell like a f*rt. Does anyone know if the AP organic is smell free.

It wasnt the one I saw at the 'ring' if thats what you mean by Ex demo :D

He had it from new for sure.

chris's scooby 21 December 2004 11:11 AM

He's been giving it some serious stick. It's the first failiure i've heard of on a WR1.

Gutmann pug 21 December 2004 11:27 AM

The second if you count custom scooby saying he did his too???

pippyrips 21 December 2004 11:31 AM

my local garage changed the clutch free of charge under warrenty, and also rebuilt the gear box at the same time and at no cost. looks like more inconsistencies between dealerships

Apologies mine is an STi8 PPP running ~350bhp.

But same clutch as the WR1.

Subaru's attitude and not just the clutches stink (Boom boom!)

Cheers,
Jon

CustomScoobyIOM 21 December 2004 11:47 AM

Actually it is running 0bhp at the moment as engine is stripped! :)

Somebody holding the car stationary on a slope with the clutch by per chance? :nono:

Very expensive driving habit on any car in the long run ;)

Like those t@ssers who sit at the lights with their foot on the brake pedal, then roll back into you when they start off? :(

Sounds a little fishy to me
I rag my car and have done the lsat 3 and had a little smelly clutch sometimes but I cant believe you have fried one in 3000 miles unless you have been slipping it a firkin lot.
No-one has ragged a WR1 like Mr Wood and I`m sure he hasnt had a clutch problem either......Mike???

Have to agree with Arron ;) I'm not into Traffic light GP's  but I have driven my STi hard on a regular basis :) and mine lasted 15kmiles till a siezed Release Brg (I had to pay for the replacment plate)

Only repeating what I was told. The car has done approx 3,000 miles and the clutch has gone.

Not doubting your word ;)

Either a mechanical failure like Pressure Plate U/S or Release bearing not freeing off.
or
He was spent 3Kmiles trying to achieve 0-60 in 3.9secs LOL :D

Having seen the way he drives it the later is possibly pretty close :D

p1doc 22 December 2004 08:50 AM

that is very impressive,he wont be selling that one careful owner-think of the poor engine-one case for having a warranty!

Want a picture of the fried clutch?

Replaced the clutch myself in the end for an aftermarket item. Least it doesn't smell anymore!

Jon.
