Fitting an Oil Catch Tank on a MY95

I've just spent the last hour or so reading numerous threads on how to fit a oil catch tank & just wanted someone to confirm that my interpretation of it all is correct.

1) There are 3 breathers. The crankcase & one from each cam cover.

2) On a MY95 the crankcase breather comes from the block & goes directly back to the intake. It is the bottom of the two connectors with the square end on it & is the most commonly used to direct oil vapours to a catch tank.

3) On a MY95 the cam cover breathers join at a T-piece somewhere under the inlet manifold and then go directly to the intake. This is the top of the two connectors on the intake & is round.

Catch can connecting options:

1) Crankcase only - By doing this I would be plugging the intake & taking the crankcase breather directly to the catch tank. The best option for the second catch can connector would be to connect a reasonably long section of hose with an oil breather (filter) attached to the end.

2) Crankcase & Cam covers - As above but I would be joining the pipe via a T-piece to the cam cover breathers before going into the catch tank. This would also mean blanking the cam cover breather hole on the intake.

3) Crankcase + cam cover breathers - In this case I would complete option 1 but would VTA the cam covers either by using pipework pointing to the ground or by using oil breathers (filters).

Do I get a gold star :D:D:D LOL

Doing just the crankcase seems like the easiest option IMHO but then it would be a pointless excercise if the oil vapours from the cam covers are still heavy. Plus if I can catch all three of these then I can get a nice piece of red Samco in place of the inlet so I would have no need for blocking the two holes.

Any comments & suggestions would be greatly received so that I don't make a complete ar$e of it all :D:D Then all I have to worry about is where to mount the 'blinging' catch tank ;)

Cheers

Oh one other thing. The catch tank I have has a connector at the bottom. I presume I just plug this & use it as a draining plug?

YES :D

Fill it with wire wool so it leaves the vapour in the tank otherwise it will just pass atraight back out the tank vent!!

5:12am posting :eek: You must have been working :D:D

Fill what with wire wool...the whole tank or just the plug??

The WHole can, I did not use wire wool as it rusts with water vapour, I used some stainless steel scourers form safeway (packs of 2) also avail at morrisions stretch them etc & they work wonderful.
Yours Looks suspiciously like this

use bottom hole as drain plug. fill can with stainless wire wool to catch the oil and allow fumes to go out.
I would suggest an addional hole in top section to vent out (opp two standard take offs) and use original two for crankcase and cams

Cheers guys i'll source some stainless wool :)

Skooby-K - I was just going to T-piece the two together into one connector & make the other catch tank connector the breather :)

Think i've got all the bits I need now:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...FACatchCan.jpg

3 meters of red overbraided fuel hose
8 or so jubilee clips (probably a few more in the tool box :)
1 breather
2 T-pieces
mounting bracket
Oh & of course the Catch tank :D:D

Just got to figure out where to put it all in this engine bay now :D:D LOL

Looking good, Now the hard bit !! as you say where to put it ??? Looks like you have the same choice as ME, By the Abs Or By the Abs :D

Or on the bulkhead by the intercooler. 1 of teh lads of the sport forum had dome this, and the only 2 pipes running to the catch tank are from the crank case and PCV, the 2 cam breathers run up to filters attached to each suspension turret.

I thought about the bulkhead by the intercooler but unfortunately my alarm is mounted there :D:D. Mmmmm by the abs or by the abs??? Now there's a tough coice :D LOL

I spose it could be mounted down in the space between the radiator & cam belt covers just below the battery...but I want to be able to see the thing coz it's nice & bling :D:D

Mmmm I guess it's back to by the abs again :D:D:D LOL

Suppose you could make a mounting bracket and undersling it from your strut brace!!!

I did think of doing this & making it quick release for ease, just depends how much time you want to spend on it i suppose

That sounds like a good idea but unfortunately i'm one of those "find a nut or bolt already there & mount it" sort of people :D:D.

I'll take a look tomorrow & see what I can come up with :) I still haven't taken the box out of the o/s front wing yet so it makes mounting it there very awkward. I've had the front bumper off so many times & i'm not sure I can be bothered again :D:D LOL

what you using to blank the holes in the induction hose?

I've got a few blanking plugs lying around :)
