powering a warning light

Can anyone tell me how to power a warning light that turns off when you turn the ignition on, and then powers back up again when the ignition is turned off.

Easy, you need a "normally closed" relay, available from electronics suppliers like Maplins.

I used to do this with a Flashing 12V LED so that it looks like an alarm, is that what you want?

If yo're interested, I may have some bits left, including the LED and instructions? PM me if you want me to look them out.

Edited to say: your local carshop MAY stock these as a kit, mine used to b4 it shut down.
