205/45 r17 or 215/40 r17??

What tyres size would be best advised to go on 17" p1 wheels? Secondly which brand? Need tyre to be good in all conditions. Road use only.

I find 215/40's better, I take it these are for a classic, if new age they should be 215/45 17's!!
