I always lusted after the 3rd generation RX7, and for various reasons got my Scooby...

Anyway, things may have to change and I was thinking of spending cash on replacing it with a used RX7, but then I remembered reading about a 4x4 version.

Much as I like RWD, I'm no longer a fan of snap-oversteer in the wet - So fancied another AWD.

Anyone know anything about it? I got fed up trying to trawl through American club sites...

PS - This is not in anyway, shape or form going to turn into an RX7 vs Scooby thread, is it?!!!!?

Scott J Davies 11 August 2000 02:54 PM

Oh and as its friday, an RX7 would have its ass kicked by a Scoob blah blah etc etc

Squizz 11 August 2000 02:56 PM

That'd be kosher?

They refer to them as twin rotary engines nowadays, oo no missus don't titter. Ow, poor soul.....

Anyway, it came to pass, but it wasn't quick enough....

Squizz 11 August 2000 03:13 PM

Indeed, I've certainly had every Tom, Dick and Harry "have a go" in various cars and (when conditions allowed) let the Scoob uphold its honour with pride...

My favourite being against a T-reg 911 carrera 2. Seems I'd upset him by drawing away from him in the twisties so he'd have a go on a dual carriage-way. Let's just say that I let him past (I'm not daft, and I don't race...) and then wanted to see if I could keep up...We were going different directions from the roundabout at the end of the carriage-way and gave each other a respectful nod.

That's the way it should be. None of this getting too close or tailgating malarky. It's just not a good idea. I still think he was left wondering why he'd spent 3 times as much on his car as my four door saloon!

But back to that AWD RX7 !

Scott J Davies 11 August 2000 03:18 PM

Don't you mean Eurogibbers stopped it from being imported!

Quick I thought it was well rapid, mind you the one I played with was well sorted http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Squizz 11 August 2000 03:22 PM

Weren't they all 280 BHP? Which meant they were "dirty jap" engines, and so would fail emissions. (aka Prodrive re-tune for P1).

Does that mean they had to run on SUL ?

Damn.

My dad tried a 2nd generation non-turbo recently, and it felt a damn sight better than his Porsche 944.

Hmmm...

Relative of mine works for Mazda and a few years back took me out in a RX7 they had, one of the nice curvy ones. All I can say was that is was rather quick, and not a bad motor. I seemed to fit ok and I'm 6ft 4in.

I did think about getting one though, local garage has one up for 18k at the mo. It's silver though, and It'd prefer black, plus it's not a scooby!

Speak to my mate Pip Gardner, he is the countries leading mazda rotary engine and RX7 specialist.

If he doesnt know about it then you are buggered.

I have posted previously re. RX7. He went to Le Mans this year in it and it blew up on the way home 55K miles, so full rebuild for 3.5K pounds complete with some internal mods. rebore etc and he recons it is chucking out 300 BHP. My car was quicker than his before ( 276 BHP UK Scooby), but he may well now have the edge know in terms of straight line grunt. Hope to get a drive next week and find out.

bernmc 13 August 2000 05:24 PM

There have been various revisions to the RX7's twin rotary engine, but the the UK never officially got the 280 bHP version - maximum for the later models here was 257 bHP. (Remember, we stopped getting the RX7 in 1994, while it's still available in Japan). Torque was only just over the 200 mark though, which makes a big difference in the real world. Some of the later Jap imports that have found their way here have 280 bHP. I've also been looking at getting one from over the water, and haven't found anything about an awd version - maybe the rumours you heard were of the RX7's replacement? UK prices for the cars are a bit silly. 15k will get a mint Jap car from around 1994, 20k will get a 98 or 99 car, (these are on-the-road-in-the-uk-prices), so don't spend loads on overpriced UK stuff. email me if you want a decent import contact in Japan http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif .
