Deviated Septum
 

Apparently some of my breathing problem is down to having a crap nose, therefore i have an appointment to have it looked at by a specialist, my GP says its pretty bad and will most likely need surgery so I was interested to se whether anyone else has had their nose rebuilt so it flows better.

Apparently it involves breaking and re-setting, scraping out excess material and generally making it work properly, I think us Anglo Saxons have under sized nostril genes.

One bonus is a week's 'Trisha' leave, no real medical aggro, just a sore nose and black eyes, no damage to the remote button/Xbox fingers, I mean why not at our place people have months off with not actual specific illness.

must be a general anaestetic job - any fears of pain you might be going through, forget it, don't waste your thoughts on it. Look forward to the moment that the big white syrnge gets emptied into the back of your hand, I would love another GA, this time I might know what to expect. The only drawback is that it is over too quickly, while it is going in it is an amazing experience, I didn't see the syringe empty, and it is hard to describe what happens in the 10 seconds or so that I thought afterwards it might have taken to empty, but it is most pleasant :)

The stuff they give you to wake you up after the op is even better :D

I had one for my wisdom teeth, its like when you switch the telly off. I think in actual fact you may as well be temporarily dead as you really dont have a clue what happened, four cans of Tennents super one after another is the nearest legally available way of simulating the effect.

and to think most people moan about anaesthetics,normally you get iv midazalam to calm you prior to "small" opsside effect-no memory!

I had this done about 4 years ago , you do have a general , and wake up with a great big piece of cotton wool up each nostril :freak3: :( oh and two black eyes:eek:

then the next day the nurse holds your head back gets a pair of pliers and slowly pulls em out , no kidding its like having your brains dragged out through your nose !!
for the next week your nose is full of dried blood (feels like bogey city !):lol1:
its an overnight stay and i took 3 weeks of work (well i was on full pay :) )
apart from that its ok , but you can breath a lot better and have a straighter nose in the process

I can't say I've had this op but I have had the (mis?)pleasure of 3 General Anaesthetics (2 eye straighteners and a replacement ear drum) in my teens :)

I've had this done, after my nose was broken for the third time. Teach me to fight and play footy:D

Unfortunately, it was NOT a success, the op often isn't, and has to be done again. I've been offered it again..................and turned it down flat:(

My reasons?

Because they are operating on your nose, you can't have small anaesthetic to put you out, and entonox to keep you there. You get a HUGE wallop of anaesthetic, and coming round is AWFUL, sickness, headaches and it lasts for AGES.

When I came round I was put back on the ward, wife came to see me, I was so groggy I couldn't stay awake. Later that night I awoke to start upchucking, my guts were full of blood, and it seemed to go on for ever. Nasty.

Next day, my nostrils are FULL of bandages/packing, I can't breathe AT ALL except through my mouth, swallowing was difficult and made my ears pop. Then the burse arrived and pulled about 4 yards of bandage from each nostril, and it WAS AGONY, and bled again for about half an hour after it.

That left me with nasal splints in place: they are stiff plastic/polythene type stuff, sewed THROUGH the septum and reach right up almost to your sinuses.
They stay in for TWO weeks and chafe, cause your nose to drip, are uncomfortable etc etc. Then you go and have THEM removed which is painfull again............that's when you discover you've it all to do again!

And just to add insult to injury, I sniffed on the way home, and nearly gagged when I sniffed up a HUGE hard bogey about 6mm thick and 25mm in diameter, it nearly choked me.

I then brought up another about two days later.

The whole experience was disgusting, painfull, nauseating, and a complete waste of time.

I've had the same experience as Alcazar...but mine worked.

I also had the unlucky side effect that under anathsetic, my blood won't clot!!! :eek:

They ended up having to put water balloons inside my face , pump them up until the bleeding stopped (see above re: gushing blood puking:( ) If that hadn't have worked, they were getting ready to clamp viens/arteries in my neck :eek:

However, it can work.
