Boost Gauge - have I fitted it properly?
I've got an MY02 WRX, to which I've just fitted a boost gauge. It appears to work correctly, but I to make sure I fitted the vacumn hose into the car properly.
Clicky The blue T-piece (circled in red) I have inserted in the place of a black plastic join on a pipe that appears to go from the exit of the turbo to the dump valve. Actually the original pipe goes off to a sensor near the wing. The pipe to the boost gauge comes into the forground and goes to the boost guage. FYI the intercooler is at the top of the piccy and the turbo at the bottom left. Have I connected it into the correct pipe? |
I'm not sure if that is right? I've just fitted one to my 95 import and the instructions said to join the t piece to one of the hoses connected to the inlet manifold (10mm diameter hoses) its the pressure building & reducing in the manifold that you want your gauge to read.

You have connected it to the wastegate not the dump valve as far as I can see.
As it looks it will measure the actual boost pressure at the turbo discharge (ie before the throttle) where as normally you see the the plenum chamber pressure after the throttle. I take it, if you drive at full throttle at 5k then lift off, the indicated pressure spikes then falls to 0 as the dump valve opens, rather than going negative like normal ? Thinking about it, fitting a gauge in this position could give some interesting info on the turbo/dump valve operation |
Yes you are right that's the wastegate :-( My excuse was it was cold and getting dark.
So where is the best place, as far as I can tell the new age cars don't have the same nice outlets that the older classics do? |

Thanks, I tried searching but my criteria must have been wrong.
To cut a long search short the link below gives good information on how to fit it. I'll be out there at lunchtime replumbing it in. http://www.mattrandolph.com/wrx/boost/ with a really good picture here http://www.mattrandolph.com/wrx/boos...s/DSC04214.htm The thread confirms why the gauge appears to be working , but showing 0.5 - 0.6 bar, the lower bar is for the actuator on the wastegate. |
I managed to break the T piece I got with the gauge when trying to disconnect the pipes!
Question - do I have to maintain the inner diameter of the T-piece. I've found another, but it's slightly smaller (original was 5mm, this new on is about 4mm)? Thanks in advance. |
haven't u got a spare nipple thing on the inlet manifold
i have on my00 classic, next to the dump valve line it had a little plastic cap on it,,,just took that off and put boost gage hose on that,no cutting or using 'T' piece thing |
That's only on classics...
