OBX headers and uppipe

I have just fitted the above with both my hks fmic and apexi induction kit. What i have found is that although there are no leaks in the full system (TSL open neck downpipe, H&S unresonated centre, Ninja backbox) the headers have changed the scooby burble i so love into a loud rasp much like an evo.

Any thoughts?

robinH20MRV 04 December 2004 10:31 PM

yup!! thats what happens!! it still sounds great as the revs get up though!!

cheers robin.

coulty 04 December 2004 10:37 PM

I heard the main benefit of the equal length is a gain in power but you lose some of the midrange torque the unequal length gives you is this right?

coulty 06 December 2004 11:59 PM

ttt for more opinions

scooby-si 07 December 2004 04:44 AM

just fitted mine this weekend and wot a noise:D mine sounds more like a skyline when iam on full chat:D have you rapped your headers and down pipe??

and the car seems to pull alot better through the gears.

iam not to bothered about the burble it sounds alot better with the obx headers on,iam running 3 1/4" decat all the way through

I have wrapped the headers and uppipe but not the downpipe. I am running only a 2.5" from downpipe back.

I am not going for running boost yet as it has not been remapped to accomodate the headers, injectors or fmic yet. Hope to very soon.

Starting to like the sound btw!

scooby-si 07 December 2004 02:49 PM

just wait till you hit 6500rpm +:D if yours red lines at 8k then its even better

mines not mapped in yet but all my gauges are reading ok took about 3 to 4 miles for the gems to sort it out

TonyFlow 07 December 2004 03:21 PM

waiting to fit mine, but I havent got the up-pipe :(

Think i'm gonna have H+S make me one up - but it's nearly the cost of a new set of OBX Headers!

you should have got the uppipe with the headers m8

TonyFlow 07 December 2004 04:48 PM

got headers s/h - thinking I can just buy an H&S up-pipe to fit (would have made them a bargain) - then found out when delivered the up-pipe has a 90deg bend in it - meaning a "standard" H&S up-pipe would'nt do the job. Fair dues to the chaps at H&S - they are extremely helpful - just gotta persuad everyone to put towards the up-pipe + *******isation to fit as a christmas present (i.e. because its a custom job it is more than the standard up-pipe) - meaning they were not such a bargain price - DOH!

Nope i am not that lucky! I have an sti2 so 7k rev limit but still feels like it will pull like a train.

Is the noise of coming off the throttle even with a recirc. meant to sound like a a big pssssshhh like you have in films like F&F ?

TonyFlow 08 December 2004 04:30 PM

I have a Type R - so that makes me want to fit them YESTERDAY - just gotta save for th up-pipe!

What difference do they make to driveability (i.e. much more top end punch etc?)

TBH I really dont know as i am not driving the car on boost as it needs to be remapped first. However i do know that althought they lose a little of the midrange torque (can be compensated by running higher boost) they do produce more power than the equivalent unequal length headers.

TonyFlow 08 December 2004 08:14 PM

when you getting it remapped?

I would imagine that some more fuel will need to be mapped in?

From the description Scooby_si gives, I am REALLY looking forward to fitting them - esp. as I have the 8K Red line as well (mated to a Blitz Nur SPec r - should be sweet!)

Dont suppose anyone can take a sound clip and host it?

I am getting it reammped within the next month. Yes more fuel but then i have done the fmic, injectors and induction all at the same time.

I will try over the weekend to get a clip of the sound and put it up/send it to you. :)

TonyFlow 08 December 2004 08:52 PM

nice one, cheers mate!

Dunno if its worth remapping, as it will only be the headers that I will be doing - maybe I shall ask Pat!

It would be worth mapping as the larger inner diameter will enable you to either run less boost for the same power or more boost for higher power. Also it will knock the A/F ratio out slightly so you may get more det until it was remapped.

scooby-si 09 December 2004 05:00 AM

hopefully sound file coming this weekend;)

just for you m8

mines not mapped in yet and there is not det at all:D

TonyFlow 09 December 2004 09:00 AM

super smashing great!

Just wish I had the freakin' up-pipe!

TonyFlow 12 December 2004 08:21 PM

TTT (hoping for some sound clips)!!!

Will be back up and running after the 22nd hopefully so will get it done then!

Stuart :)

TonyFlow 13 December 2004 02:36 PM

Bugger! Hope you can sort it OK - 550's are my next port of call - running about 310bhp so maxing out the 440's - are they a difficult mod, or fairly easy to fit?

Ordered an H + S up-pipe today - so getting there! After finding out we ARE getting a healthy bonus, I will be able to afford the modifications to th up-pipe!

Wonder if Scooby-si managed a recording!

scooby-si 13 December 2004 04:30 PM

didnt get a chance to do it this weekend ill try and get it done asap;)

TonyFlow 13 December 2004 07:57 PM

cheers mate!

chrome 14 December 2004 11:46 PM

obx are fun @ the top end.. altho you might find that you dont get to really stretch its legs often enough..

i had OBX and went to gruppeS..

prefer the sound now tbh with my lo0n modified hiper..was too tinny with OBX., and the low down driveability of gruppeS is nice.

Altho I sometimes miss the insane OBX scream @ 6k+ :D
bearing in mind that 6k+ is lo0ny speeds in nearly every gear.

RobJenks 15 December 2004 07:48 AM

Gutting up-pipe

A job I want to do , but don't want to waste my time if the up-pipe on my MY99 does not have the catalytic converter in.
Can anybody confirm whether it does or not?

TonyFlow 15 December 2004 12:28 PM

MY99 up pipe has no cat - the only cats are downpipe and centre section!

Chrome, I have a Type R that likes to scream its nuts off anyways, and I wouldn't have thought anything will sound too tinny with a Nur Spec R on?

Out of interest, what driveability differences were there between OBX and Gruppe S?

P20SPD 15 December 2004 12:32 PM

more mid range torque with gruppe s, but more top end with obx, simple as that

TonyFlow 15 December 2004 06:18 PM

Cheers, when you say more mid range with the gruppe s, i assume the OBX do not detract from the standard mid range torque (im hoping they add to it - even if not as much as the Gruppe S ones).

Just got my standard fit H+S Up-pipe today, when I fit this, will I notice a difference in sound on the standard headers (as I am running out of time to get the up-pipe modified b4 chrimbo!)

P20SPD 15 December 2004 09:01 PM

they still give more mid range than standard.

you wont notice any diff with sound by changing the up pipe.
