Power to weight (or more specifically, paw/weight) IS important if you like driving down roads with bends in them & to a lesser extent, traffic light grand prix's ...it becomes a pretty redundant figure if you're into top speed testing

Dont forget about this

E46 M3 60 to 100 in 6.8 seconds
M3 Evo takes 6.9 seconds
P1 does it in 7.7 seconds.

There really isnt much between an M3 Evo and E46 once rolling

End of ;)

Oh, and who would like a video of my P1 versus an E46 M3 round Silverstone video? I can't host it, but if someone else can, i'm happy to send them the Mpeg. Yes, it took me half a lap to catch him from a standing start, but it was in the twisties and he did have a bit of a start (TM)

I nearly brought a 996 Turbo earlier this year, funny thing is the insurance would have been 200 a year cheaper than the scoob :D

P1 v M3

Bobby Peru 04 December 2004 10:02 AM

Erm, I guarantee that would have been down to the driver (poss new M3 driver unsure of RWD charcteristics).

I've had a modded P1 and these is no way it could have reeled an e46 M3 in so easily.

skiddus_markus 04 December 2004 10:57 AM

I don't see it as queue jumping really(and I hate that).I often park on the wrong side of the pump and stretch the hose over or reverse up to one when they're 2 or 3 pumps in a row and a car at the first pump is blocking them.If JJ had been coming from the opposite direction he wouldn't have been expected to wait.

Mad Gypsy 04 December 2004 10:59 AM

Have to agree about the driver skill. My last car was a 310bhp STi Type R. The couple of times I had encounters with E46 M3's it was very close, nothing in it. Only on launch could I pull ahead of one.

Neither P1 or M3 seemed to be driving flat out?

Fat Boy 04 December 2004 01:13 PM

Driver skill?? Flattering, but I don't think so.

It was my first lap of the day as I got there late so I started off slowly as you could see - i was just cruising on a trailing throttle through most of Becketts- but then as we came on to the beginning of the Hangar straight I thought why don't i have a go.

The M3 had been out on track quite a lot already (i was told it was one of the guys from easytrack - marcus? but don't know if that's true) so I don't think he was hanging around, well certainly not out of the pits anyway, although he did display impeccable etiquette by indicating early and pulling over after Vale.

Would still have an M3 as they're great cars, but their weight really tells against them under braking (especially if they're on the crap standard brakes) and cornering.

My p1 has a 2.5" decat exhaust and a tek 3 plus fuel pump, but that's it, no fancy induction etc. So it's not standard, agreed, but i would seriously doubt if it has more than 300bhp /300ft lb, so around 230 bhp per tonne.

TonyBurns 04 December 2004 04:53 PM

My old MY00 PPP'd decat scoob came across an E46 M3 (SMG), i tried (note the tried) to keep up, he just left me for dead  (thats a 262bhp scoob btw).
New car on the other hand has the opposite effect ;)
1 E36 M3 Evo, just the look of sheer shock on his face as i reeled him in and then passed him, i dont think he could believe it ;)
1 E46 M3 convertable, from a shell garage on the A14, he couldnt keep up and he was trying :p
1 E46 M3 on the A14 again, thought he was quick, just wasted him both in and though the gears ;)
1 E46 yesterday, downed it a couple of gears as he thought he'd show up the wrx behind him  unfortunately its an STi and he got reeled in also :p
The only thing i found is that they all seemed to be a bit up themselves (BMW drivers i suppose), still to their minds they probably outpaced the scoob because you dont get scoobs that aint heavily modified that keep up with M3's (wrong!! :p) mine just has a panel filter ;):D

I was actually pointing to a LACK of skill on the part of the M3 driver.

Either you have a Spec C, Type 25, or are just speaking crap!

TonyBurns 04 December 2004 05:28 PM

I see!

Not all BMW drivers are up themselves.

In the last 3 years I've owned 2 BM's (coupe and cab), a 310 bhp STi Type R and now a 996. So, am I stuck up, a chav or a w4nker? ;)

TonyBurns 04 December 2004 05:39 PM

Well thats a hard one ;)
Id go for a Porsche over BM anyday though ;) and i dont find that Porsche drivers are stuck up (as they are normally doing 70 in the middle lane and not 3 inches off your rear bumper in a 318i lol!;))

Acceleration at high speeds, usually above 60 mph then whp to weight is a misleading stat to make predictions with. Drag affects the car and blunts acceleration just as much as extra 1000 kilos does. The answer is more power, not lower weight.

A 200 hp car weighting 1000 kilos will get outperformed by a 400 hp car that weighs 2000 kilos in a straight line race, even though peak power to weight, and the power band relatively are the same.

At last, sense from someone.

About time you guys knew your place. :)

FletchCSL 06 December 2004 12:47 PM

The M3 in that video isn't trying, if it was you simply carried alot more speed out of that last turn - driver skill
