Donut technique?
 

Hey guys,i've had my 95 WRX for about 4 months and im not sure about doing donuts,theres a guy at my work with a 95 Celica gt4 with 306 bhp and he keeps doin donuts,n i wanna out do him! The problem is that i dont have a clue about doin donuts!Any help? cheers

you will struggle in the dry, and in the wet unless its pretty greasy or slippery

try pactising on sum wet grass if you can

The difficulty is upsetting the car, which is the problem with 4wd.

As sticky says, damp is best. It can be done in the dry, but you really need a Type with the diff loading up the rear - cheating really :D There's a good clip of a 22b somewhere...

Not actually tried a close turn one, but I guess having it in 2nd, roll in a straight line, pull hard on the wheel one way then hard the other way to upset it, while planting your foot. That may well kick the back end out. The difficulty then is to keep the wheels spinning :)

Easiest way to upset the car is to accelerate hard into a handbrake turn then handbrake of and slip clutch as if you are trying to spin wheels in a front wheel drive car.You will probably find it just drifts in large circles.For max fun you need the type r diff,this produces waltzer type fun :norty:

Or just inflate the rear tyres to 60psi!!!

i would advise against useing the handbrake

Yes, mr diff and rest of the drivetrain doesn't like it...

As long as the clutch is pushed in ready to slip it when the h.brake is applied and you dont start spinning wheels till handbrake is of :) everything will be fine

You have 4 wheels rotating, pull the handbrake and the rears brakes will lock the wheels. This will give a sudden shock to the centre diff. Clutch and gearbox would be fine though.

DCCD full open... turn steering wheel all the way, drive in a circle partial throttle near torque peak up to the point of the rear tires slipping and floor it. To exit nicely, slowly straighten wheel about 1/2 a rotation before the direction you want to be facing and correct on exit.

Actually this is the first donut I ever did! I learned from playing Colin McRae 2 on my PC... ;)

Doubt it.
Best/easiest way is on grass (doesn't have to be wet)
From a standstill... turn almost full lock, floor the throttle, round it goes.
Doing it whilst moving (but not very fast!)... trickier cause the car will want to understeer so you'll have to flick the car into the turn as you floor the throttle.

Beware that you don't do too much though, as the top mounted intercooler won't be getting much air and gets extremely hot. You might burst a pipe or worse.

I managed to do my first one in a muddy gravel carpark last week in my forester. I have had many attempts resulting in understeer previously. As posted earlier, unsettling the car is really hard. The 'scandinavian flick' may be the best way, but that means travelling at speed, not a good idea in any sort of confined space (100m square or less!). The other way is to put relatively bald tyres on the back, which is what I have at the moment. :D

doing donuts in the dry has best affect. i.e smoking tyres. full lock. 1st gear. clutch in,handbrake up,clutch up.handbrake off same time.4 wheel spin/drift.practice makes perfect and 1 way will spin better than another.i.e left lock right lock.

i find i have to move steering left to right to always be balanced otherwise it will wheelspin on the spot or not atall.once you know where the cars heading unwind the steering for 4 wheel drift. it is gr8 fun but not healthy atall!!

looks good. reminds me of an m3, wheels spinning, keeping a lock on and doing it that tight.shows how tail happy a type r is! no offence

I am now running more power (346bhp) so I could possibly do it on dry tarmac, but I'm scared of breaking it ;)

obviously it would be better to do this on a clod day rather than a hot day for intercooler heat soak?

I did some class ones for the first time on an icy car park....front end not moving at all...(apart from round obviously)

I have a forge VTA. It sounds like that because of the FMIC and the Induction kit.

handbrake turns on a 4wd car is NO fullstop. no such thing as a safe handbrake turn on a scooby. IT WILL BREAK.
