XP Home / Pro Differences
 

Quick question,

What is the differences between XP Home and Pro?
Also seem to remember when they first came out a lot of people had problems with XP Home, is this still the case?

I will need to network 2 PC's connected to NTL usual games/work use for both PC's

Which would suit this use?

Not a vast amount of difference for home only use. Most of the enhancements in pro are concerned with networking stuff (being able to connect to domains for example - in home you can only use workgroups). You can easily network xp home pcs together via a router to an NTL connection (I've done it several times)...

I always say XP Pro if you have more than one machine and want them networked for file/printer sharing as XP Home has no option to remember network usernames and passwords - these have to be entered each time you wish to make a connection.

Others may disagree

I never get my xp pro machines to remember network usernames / passwords. Just asking for trouble if more than one person has access to the pc (renders security pretty much pointless if you never have to type in the password).

Right, I think it will be a pain if I have to keep putting in passwords, its only a home PC and I have not got any secrets (read Porn) that I dont want the missus to see....... :D

On XP Pro you can install IIS which you can't do on XP Home. If you are not developing server side web applications then you don't need IIS.

Ideally in an office environment you'll need Pro, but for home networking you'll be fine with Home.

My home environment i use Win 2000 advanced server as the main PC with 2 wireless XP home machines connected it, without any problem.
