My wife was Protected at one company and had a small accident with them. When ringing round or doing online quotes at renewal time, most of the insurers didn't allow the Protect NCB option to be selected as soon as I put that accident in.

Usually protecting your NCB means you can have 2 accidents in a 3 year period without losing any NCB, but you will either have to stay with the current insurers (in which case they'll sting you bigtime with the renewal premium) or find an insurer that will allow you to protect again (in which case the premium is usually quite high). We were lucky and went with Privilege at about £40 dearer than the previous year.

Remember, having an accident will still put your premium up even with protected NCB. You just get the same discount from the higher initial premium.

I found that protecting your NCB was only about 10% more, so I always do it. Losing 20-30% of your bonus for not protecting it could be quite costly.

I paid £880 for my insurance which included protected NCB. Im 24 with 5 years NCB.

The price would have been £760 if i didnt protect my NCB.
Sounds a good price and save some money...........but (for example) if i didnt take out the protected NCB and had an accident and it was my fault and lost all of my NCB........no scoob for me again because the insurance would be sky high as i would be back to zero NCB.

So for the sake of a few hundred quid more its a deffinate must IMO.

I think you can only protect your NCB if you have 4 or more years, and I've been told that you'll lose either 2 or 3 years (off the insurers maximum) if you have an accident and it wasn't protected. e.g. from 5 years @ 70% to 2 years @ 40%.

As an example your renewal would be affected like this:-

Initial undiscounted premium for current insurance of £2000 (prior to accident)
A 5 year 70% discounted NCB means you'd pay a £600 premium.

You have an accident. Initial undiscounted renewal premium goes up by £500 to £2500 (to take into account the accident).

Assuming you had protected - a 5 year 70% discounted NCB means you'd now pay a £750 premium (up £150)
Assuming you hadn't protected - a 2 year 40% discounted NCB means you'd pay a whopping £1500 premium (up £900).

Quite a difference!!!!
