Black smoke and no power
I wonder if anyone can help me out, my 97 uk turbo, every now and again the car looses power and blows out black sooty smoke if I press the clutch and rev the engine it stops doing this I let the clutch back up and again no power, any advise please???
thanks in advance 2scoobs |
Black smoke is a sign of excess fuel. If you have a standard dump valve they are known to leak.
If it leaks you'll get the fuel but no boost so loads of unburnt fuel from the exhaust. |

Thanks for the reply's chaps the dump valve is not the standard one, It was fitted by a mate of mine who is a mechanic, He has had a few scooby turbo's over the years so he seems to know what he is doing but due to unforseen circumstance's and work commitment's I don't see him that often otherwise I would ask him what the problem could be, but the Turbo is ok (I hope) as it may run fine one day and crap another.
Someone suggested it could be a dirty fuel filter could this be possible? or Knackered sparkplugs... cheers 2scoobs |
no and no..
vacuum pipe leak.. check and preferably replace the pipes between manifold and boost solenoid and pressure exchange solinoid and mpa sensor.. they can crack and only open up occasionally causing rich running etc.. Also check your intercooler pipework is all secure. spark plugs or fuel filter would not cause this |

one pipe between boost solenoid and air intake (on the earlier cars anyway) has a restrictor in it, a metal piece with a small hole drilled in it, make sure you don't through it away by accident. Not sure which pipe it is fitted in, on the 97 onwards cars.
