18" wheels
 

Just ordered a set of prodrive wheels in 17" and unpackaged them and found they are 18`s.

Just wondering what people think about scoobied on 18`s handling wise. Been told they dont handle very well on 18`s

I wouldn't bother complaining if I were you. I will happily swop a set of my 17's for them!!!

From reports the P1 is meant to be better on 18's. Don't know about the rest. I have some but not fitted yet so can't compare.

I've tried 16's, 17's & 18's on my '99 Jdm classic and without doubt the 18's feel superior :)

What tyres do i need to run to get them on though And is it gonna looked jacked up

i've got 18's running on 225/45/18's - seems fine to me!

Prodrive recommend having 18's if you have PPP.

bloomin high profile, i personally wouldgo for slightly lower profile to try and keep it similar, but yoy will sacrfice some comfort

i read that but thats only in the brochure, i saw it as a marketing point to make you splash out.

The car has a bit more than PPP 450+ so not sure. Am tempted to go back to the original plan and sell the 18`s and get 17`s. Only have 2 at the min and for another 2 from subaru they are 234+vat 17`s are only 170+vat.
Bought the 2 off ebay as they were advbertised as 17`s opend the box and they looked a bit big, turned them over and saw 7 1/2 X 18

i changed the 17's on my old p1 for 18's , far better, that was running 225/35 's

Only thing is when i launch mine the back end really drops and grips. Been told that once the exhaust hit the floor :eek2:

So im a bit worried about the wheels going into the arch and hitting. And also the amount of tyres i will go through

better turn in, better handling, no loss in comfort, slight rubbing on one rear strut when the kids were in the back whilst chucking it around roundabouts, never heard anything just saw some paint rubbed off the strut whilst cleaning it

Hi mate, Ive got an RA on 18"s and it handles great, sits ok but im gonna lower mine anyway. 7.5x18/235/40 w/Toyo Proxes T1's :)

Scoobys actually handle the best on 16's as that was what the suspension is set up for. Subaru recommend 17's at the maximum for handling!

i disagree with that, ive had a 97 turbo on 16's, wasnt brilliant, tried an rb5 on 17's which was great, had a p1 on 17's which was great till fitting 18's when it was even better

i'm running 18" prodrive WRC1s on my MY00 classic turbo. Never looked back, handling and looks are second to none.

Ive always found that with my previous cars that putting on bigger wheels improves the handling, but from various Subaru publications I've read, they say 16's are the best. Both my last Scooby and current one are on 16's so I've not had the experience of the larger wheels, so you other owners with the bigger wheels would know better. Bigger wheels look better too!

Id be inclined to agree with that.

I can't find the thread but Mike Wood said on here once that 16" wheels were the optimum size for handling on the classic shape Impreza. Bigger isn't always better for handling, as your wheel sizes go up you need to spend more to to make sure you aren't increasing unsprung weight. Cheap big wheels with low profile tyres often weigh more than cheap smaller wheels with taller profile tyres.

With heavier wheels, as well as the suspension having to cope with increased unsprung weight, the extra weight will affect steering turn-in and acceleration/deceleration due to gyroscopic effect.

It's quite noticable in a car like the new Mini Cooper if you compare the handling on 15" wheels against 17" wheels, they handle far better on 15" but the poseurs like to put big wheels on even though it handles worse afterwards.

Well the original plan was 17`s aas i have been told in the past that they handle on better on 17`s rather than 18`s

Having said all that, my P1 has 17" wheels and i'm not exactly disappointed with the handling. ;) :D

Didn't Prodrive make the RB5 handle so well by simply chucking on a set of 17" wheels? :D

They also claimed that they developed the P1 for 18" wheels, and anything but 18" would compromise the handling they intended for it. They only put 17's on (if you believe them) for type approval, as snow chains wouldn't fit on 18" wheels.

I've had 16", 17" and 18", and there's no doubt in my mind that the 18" wheels improve the handling at minimal cost to ride comfort.

You could be right, but what i wonder is how much of that is sales pitch. Manufacturers know full well that the trend is for bigger wheels and lower profile tyres. My P1 grips like a limpet but i wonder what a MY99 would be like with P1 suspension (Eibach springs and uprated dampers) and 16" wheels and decent tyres - my guess is it'd be just as good as the P1 if not better.

Ive had 18s on my 03 with toyos far better with 17s with bridgestones
