RANT - advice needed

OK, here's the drill. I went into Sainsburys about 15 mins ago, and stood to look at the sarnies. A black chap in blue uniform was carrying a tray of diet coke bottles, and got to about 3 feet of me and dropped one.

He then looked at it, looked at me and frowned.

I looked back at him and raised my eyebrows.

He frowned even harder at me.

I frowned just as hard at him. Someone then picked it up for him - he didn't even thank them, then walked on. The whole time he was still scowling at me, and me at him. This continued until he was out of sight.

What should I do?

Incidently, what I did do was to offer some choice language (available upon request) and am thinking of reporting him. Rude sod.

davegtt 17 November 2004 12:15 PM

he was probably looking at your to use your common sence and help him pick up the dropped bottle.

True, and I would have done - if he hadn't given me this evil arse look like I'd raped his mother whilst magically making the bottle fall without touching it!

Still see your point tho

Pastor 17 November 2004 12:17 PM

Why did he not ask nicely? Or smile even, indicating he'd like your help assuming he was struck dumb for whatever reason.
Sounds like an ignorant pig (no pun intended honest)to me.

edited to add I voted for the wrong option by mistake- ignore the swine!

I feel people shouldnt need to ask for this kid of help. its obvious the guy had his ands full and could have done with a hand to pick it up, I have no excuse for him not thanking the person who did pick it up for him though

EddScott 17 November 2004 12:26 PM

Really you must waste no more time and arm yourself with something heavy and go back to Sainsburys and hide in the bushes until you see him again.

When you do see the chappy jump out of said bush and beat him senseless with heavy object.

Job done.

scurge of the 21st century all this frowning and rudeness. watched a program about it on c4 last night and tis true. the nation is getting progressively more rude as time goes on

its all about diffusing situations and squashing them to nothing. admittedly he could have been more polite but that's no reason to respond with the same. 9/10 times if you smile at someone you'll get a positive response so you could have smiled, picked the can up, let him stack his cans and carry on looking for a tasty sarnie.

not having a go as i'd have probably done the same but we could all do with chilling just a tad in these hectic times :)

Good point, but I must admit I think it was on his terf, so he should have smiled first - I'm the customer, he is the seller, so he should take a bit more care of me.

true. customer service has gone to the dogs these days so he should have said 'excuse me please' or something to that effect.

the sad thing is you were only getting a sarnie and who needs this kind of bollox when nipping out for lunch  . sign of the times i fear.

cigarboy 17 November 2004 01:03 PM

Yeah, I don't go *looking* for a fight by any means, i'm not like that.

I will, however, respond if seriously provoked. Just feel like my personal space was violated for no reason. If I had knocked it over then I would have picked it up and probably mumbled sorry as well.

+Doc+ 17 November 2004 01:03 PM

Pick the bottle up for him and see his reaction, if afterwards he does nothing then this is the time to make judgement imho.

ajm 17 November 2004 01:04 PM

You should have asked him why he was looking accusingly at you. Life is too short to waste on misundertandings of this nature.

Then, depending on the acceptability of his answer, you should have either helped him out with the dropped bottle and some advise on positive body language or, if the answer was unfavourable, told him he was a rude oik and reported him to his seniors.

Job done.

I'm with the above....

Someone complained in my office recently because someone spoke to them in the wrong tone of voice  I had to waste time dealing with this and I asked if they had swore at them, insulted them, etc etc
No...... they just didn't like the tone of voice

Purely IMHO, this is a sad indication of the true nanny state that this country has turned into.

You get upset because someone frowns at you :cuckoo:

I agree that customer service standards is pretty low at the present moment and we can learn alot from other countries (the States, Sweden and Rep of Ireland I have been impressed with recently).

However, getting upset because someone frowns at you, says it all IMHO

Are you going to try and get compensation for mental anguish ? ;)

edited to say that I would of asked him what his problem was, hopefully he'd take a swing and then the camera's would have the evidence to get the moody get sacked :D:D

Ditto

cigarboy 17 November 2004 01:27 PM

Was largely because he turned his head around for the whole length of walking the shop to frown. I see your point that we can't cry over spilt milk, but there comes a point where individual people start to take offense. Guess I'm thinner skinned than you, thats all. ;)

Can't think why he should even have to ask in that situation. Just a matter of thinking about someone else for once.
