PLAY AT TOP OF CLUTCH PEDAL, MY00 TURBO.

At the top of my clutch pedal there is about 2 inches of loose freeplay before it actually takes up any pressure. Its progressively got worse in the last couple of weeks. It first started with a 'click' from the top of the pedal every time I pressed it. Now if I press it, the pedal releases the clutch fully but then sticks at the top, then 'pings' up at the last couple inches if you take your foot all the way off. The clutch itself operates fine but its just getting a little uncomfortable to drive.

WHAT IS IT??

You can adjust the free play in the footwell, perhaps it has come loose?

I have this problem with my car, though not as bad. Yesterday though the problem changed to the pedal going slightly "loose" at the top of the travel and it started vibrating with road bumps. I've checked it tonight and found the bolt that holds it onto the dash cross member had come loose! A drop of threadlock and a nip up has sorted it.

Get your head up under dash. IIRC there's a sort of over centre linkage at top of clutch pedal. Make sure all is in place and tightened as above. Check spring in place and not broken.

Spring is fine and pulling the pedal all the way up. Its almost like the master cylinder is sticking a couple of inches from full release and then the spring just pings it up at the last point. If you bring your foot up slowly, the pedal sticks just before the top. Then, all of a sudden.... 'boing'...spring pulls it up for the last little bit.

Not saying this will cure it but before taking master cylinder out try a spot of red brake rubber grease on the pushrod just above the dustseal on the m/cyl. That worked on my 99 when new cos that had a sort of sticky pedal.

Have known the slave cylinder to be sticky also the spring snap on the clutch arm,you can see it under the i\c
Just a thought

SLAVE?

Thought that was at the gearbox end? ..or did you mean MASTER?

The problem definitely seems on the MASTER/PEDAL side of things. I'll give that grease thing a try that was suggested.

Clutch slave cylinder is at the g\box end, i had sticking prob cleaned piston greased etc:ended up changing s\cyl and broken return spring on the arm, cured my prob.
Get someone to push the clutch pedal and watch the operation at the slave cylinder.

I had this on my first leggy after a clutch change but i adjusted the freeplay as per instructions and it was fine there should be a little freeplay anyway

I have exactly the same problem as you scoobydoobydom, not that much freeplay!! but clicks at the top when you take your foot off. Also have a my00. Was gonna leave it till the next service but i might have a look at it this weekend. Would be interested to know how you solve it.
