Well today was certainly interesting...
I was nervous as hell as it was crunch time! Theres been lots on here recently about rolling roads and their accuracy etc, theres also been a fair bit about how hard it really is to acheive big leaps in effective (useable) power.
last time I ran on the RR, I had a dawes device set to 1.15bar, full decat, green panel filter and that was about it.
I made 258bhp and 238 ftlb I think, going for 300 was going to prove costly.
Ive done the fatal thing of trying to put a cost to this, Im not as gutted as I thought I would be :norty:
Ive documented my mods in detail in the past on here, but the main thing has been a desire to stick to making the car run better and keeping the exterior reasonably standard.
being a humble UK car but hiding away a tasty power increase can have its advantages...:norty:
first two cars run and the owners are not happy :rolleyes: (but with good reason!), way down on previous runs, we establish by a controlled 2wd run that the front rollers are not playing ball (flooded last week) so we try a total of three cars as a control:
2wd c3 citroen, newage sti and a classic sport, all had undertaken dyno runs at PS recently and had their charts with them.
a calculation or two seemed to hold water that it was a factor of 1.2322 in error. (23.22% under reading, the calibration on the rear rollers seemed spot on, the fronts were under reading)
this held true in as much as all three cars were within 3bhp of their previous run...
(rough as a badgers arse but PS had said they'll do all the runs etc for freebies and I had driven a long way;))
regardless of the final power figure, I was more interested in the shape of the curves and the all important area underneath.
I had also been keeping fairly quiet about my goals because I didnt want to walk the walk without being able to talk behind it!
it was a lovely cold bright day but unfortunately the guy we were following went a few extra junctions up the m5 so I had about an eighth of a tank of optimax to start.

first run, bit of slip, sounding good, (cheekily advanced the ignition a few degs. on the hand commander ;))
aborted run at 348bhp (after correction) at 5700rpm, operator said it was still pulling like a train but I was in-car with him and it looked like it was starting to det on the knock count (hand commander proves essential again), may have been a spike but not willing to kill engine for a couple of brake!
unfortunately I wasnt able to get the peak torque value, Rich at PS had said it would be no trouble to do another run but the peak graph was lost for good :( as he set up for the next run.

2nd run, alls well but the fuel gauge is starting to sweat a little now.
331bhp (after correction) with standard road map and running no advance and again its pulling like a train.
after the last run I lost my bottle and aborted at 6610rpm with a (most probably background noise) 11 knock count.
decided that as figures werent a good reflection (despite apprarent closeness with correction) it wasnt worth pushing anything at all.

so Im over the moon, a uk99, a td05, and avc-r and a apexi pfc mapped by Andy. Sackfulls of power and torque at amazingly low rpm
theres been an awful lot of activity recently and even more chat about AndyF's mapping and I think this proves that what people have been saying is correct and well founded.

the most relevent part about it, (as far as on road driving is concerned) is the shape of the curves, beautifully smooth without spikes or troughs and peak torque is a shade over 4000rpm. peak power is at the aborted 6610rpm so when I decide to run again I will let them take it to the redline, but I got my indication that I wanted.
Regardless that the rollers were 23% the physical shape of the graph was going to be a ture reflection, and I was not disappointed! :cool:

As some of the regulars of 22b.com will know, I have been having boost control issues with my Apexi Avc-R, overboosting and failing to keep a grip on peak levels leading to fuel cut if not concentrating.
Well the apexi avcr behaved impecably, managed with AndyF's and Mark wild's help to trim a few % from the wastegate duty and Pavlo for the actuator help, I peaked at a very healthy 1.33 bar. :cool: :cool:
just a little above design levels but I know the car has been very safely mapped to 1.5 bar and beyond :eek: to provide bags of fuel during any over boost, so a little bit over wasnt going to hurt ;)
I asked the operator what he recommended for me and he said the best thing I could do would be to not touch that car anymore, he thought it was incredible.
I will try to scan and post it on monday for anyone who'd like to see.

so whats next?
well Im after a wideband lambda to keep a carefull eye on things and Im definately toying with the idea of a 20g upgrade.
with friends I have been working on a DIY inlet as well as relocating (come on TweenieRob!!;)) the power steering reservoir.
A cold air system is also on the cards with a boxed in filter being fed from the mini scoop and also from the removed fog light area.
of course the intercooler is the limiting factor at the moment for raising boost so a custom jobbie is the next step and Im speaking to Stevebt about that, I'll stick with tmic if thats ok with you lot though ;)
Im not that technically advanced as to have a digital camera for pics at the moment but I might be able to rag one from work to back up the above with a few shots of my car and what's been done to it.

This kind of feed-back is great for us fellow 300+ bolt-on modders.

God, I hope mine will follow this kind of success in the spring.
I'm kicking off with 314 bhp @1.25bar/Optimax/decat on my Sti v3. 380 bhp is great, but it's the fat flat torque I want most.

Are you making 348bhp on oe injectors? - I have some of the same setup that you have and only makes 290bhp. TD05 @1.25bar, HKS EVC5, Openneck, Full decat HKS, KN, TMIC, Link ECU.. Guess I have some mapping to do yet.....

But great result!!! WOW!!

Interesting that the only differences of note between yours and my own engine spec is the AVC-R, fly and ported headers. I'll be doing the headers myself over the next two weeks but had been holding off the AVC-R - looks as though it may be time to shell out again!

Out of interest, is your filter shielded/ducted at all?

Carl, not at the moment, Ive spoken with Harvey about this and will be adding some form of shield, plenty of wrap for the turbo as well!
been following your thread with interest and was certainly nervous when the dyno spoke, even with a 23% under read I made 283bhp.

I think the biggest benefit of ported headers is torque, not so much HP.
because its still fairly restrictive it helps to make bags of torque throughout the range.
Equal lengthers will provide a greater increase but it was a little too high up the rev range for my liking. oh and the fact that I got a set beautifully ported for about a quarter of the cost of a decent set aftermarket.
your point was so well made because when I was going for 300hp there were a great deal of things that I wouldnt have dreamed of buying but which suddenly became essential.
walboro fuel pump and fse reg (missed on spec above), for example, am currently running std. 440's but will be investing in some of the new fangled 740's next time AndyF is in town.

I used a full washer bottle of icey water over the two runs :eek:
before the first run I had 4 * 2pint milk cartons full of ice draped over my tmic ;)

I really delighted with it, its nice to have a bit of fun with a RR and to have a bit of kudos down the next meet, but more importantly I have got power in torque by the spadefull throughout the rev range and hence a massive area under the curve.

forgot the graph today but will be able to scan it tomorrow, I will take a few photos of my car today though, anyone like any specific shots?

Flat,
you cant really see the full extent of the pipework, but I cut the line to the headlamps just down by the battery, ran some halfords washer hose inside that and bolted down with a jubille, then ran the hose through a couple of "T"'s to get the nozzles somewhere near where I wanted them. Dont forget the all important non-return valve just before the nozzles to keep pressure up :thumb:

The only reason I mounted them on the tmic is because if they were bonnet mounted I couldnt use them on the rollers, so I simply got some shiney metal heatproof(ish) masking from work and stuck em to my top mount.
shamefully, I cannot fully remember the chap who so kindly donated the nozzles, it was Ian (?) I believe who has the screen name Manny(?) but they are hozelock specials and Im sure I owe him a pint!

i tried mounting a bar across my IC but i can't get the holes small enough to produce a mist, all i get is 20 very direct jets of water :rolleyes: might just go back to the nozzles that were already there :)

In all seriousness i can feel some messing with octane booster, water spray and ice cubes :eek: coming on as i have redundant headlight washers at the moment too. Something inside me wants to make an 'everyday' 300 though.

My Scoob's will be ready soonish, just waiting on the Adaptors for the injectors and the fmic...

I wanted a high power run and tried to advance the ignition too far, hence aborted the run at 348bhp.
on my standard map (just as intended for the road) I made a healthy 331bhp.
we are back on the rollers in February at Tuning Japanese, I will be (fingers crossed) able to post a better graph and a few more nuggets of info :norty:
have got print out with me, will need a more knowledgable chap than me to work the damn scanner though!
