Dipol security lock

Sorry moderators but moved here in the hope of attracting a response - which I failed to do in SECURITY section. Is the Dipol Security Lock as listed in the Subaru website under accessories at £217.38 excl fitting the one that locks the gearbox in 1st or reverse? Reportedly very difficult to overcome - true or not?? Comments appreciated

I've got it fitted to my STi.

You stick the car in reverse and insert a mahoosive metal pin (about 20cm long by about 3cm circumference). It locks in and fits flush to the tunnel, so to get at the thing you'd have to destroy half the gearbox. They key is a high security one.

Coupled with a Disklok I would suspect it was too much of a pain in the ar$e for most if not all car thieves.

Could take some piccies of the installation on mine if you want.

Ummmm....sort of...

The Dipol barrierlock system is the security system that fits the 6 speed STI box in reverse...in my opinion an extremely good anti theft system, and I am not aware of ANY being overcome whilst on a Scoob.

This system uses a 6inch steel pin which locks into place from the drivers side of the gear change

Barrier deadlock (imported by the same company and also available via the subaru dealer network) is a similar system however this doesn't have a removable pin, instead it uses a barrel lock located on the passenger side.

Barrier Deadlock is I believe slightly cheaper and suitable for the Classic Scoob and new shapes with 5 speed boxes....and from passed experience works equally well in either 1st or reverse (please note that the manufacturer stresses reverse only!!)... I know it works in first cos I used to gets loads of calls from my ex after she'd set off in the P1 in 1st and then realised that she couldn't change gear!!!!!!

Any queries give me a call on 07798 762285 or direct 0113 202 1227

I've had both (on different cars obviously!). As RUM says it works in reverse gear. Slightly more fiddly then the Barrier but still easy to use. Comes with a plastic bracket which holds the pin when not in use. I havent bothered with the bracket, just put my pin in the centre cubby hole.
I'm no security expert but from what the fitter at TSL said it would not be too easy to overcome.

Thanks lads, mine of information as always. Sounds like the barrier deadlock may be slightly more secure though? However looking at a 6 speed STI so may not be an option?

Nevetas 10 November 2004 09:41 AM

I have dipol fitted to my 6 speed Sti

Works well.

Rum* 10 November 2004 02:08 PM

Its either/or depending on the car you have....Dipol is the one that fits the 6 speed box...

To fit the old barrierlock system involved a bit of welding work..

The Dipol system doesn't....plastic case/surround off the gear area...unbolt 4 bolts, fit new bracket and then apply 4 shear bolts...remembering to mark where the hole in the plastic surround has to go first....drill 30mm hole....line it all up....45 mins....job done...

Once fitted and bolt applied....no way of getting the thing off unless you take some heavy duty cutting gear to it....

As stated above strongly recommended!!! :D

If only we could get insurance companies to understand what it was and discount accordingly

Not 100% sure. Ring a dealer up, they should know. :)

Neil W 25 November 2004 12:25 PM

Got the Dipol on my Sti and very easy to use etc..

Apparently very difficult to bypass which is not always a good thing as someone tried to nick a friends car the other week and as the immobiliser prevented this they set fire to it!

Nevetas 25 November 2004 01:38 PM

ouch! But personally if my car was nicked and recovered I would not want it back. I would rather it was set on fire so I could just get a new one.

Do we know of any insurance companies who approve this as one of their security measures. I suppose if it's a marginarly reduced premium the why not have it.

Allan 11 November 2011 05:27 PM

Dipol used to state on their promotional stuff that it was insurance approved, but I never found one that gave a discount, including Keith Michaels.

Shame really, as it's a very robust bit of kit.

Davey L 11 November 2011 05:34 PM

I'll have to see if the local dealers fit them when my new car arrives next week. Every bit of security helps

Davey L 18 November 2011 06:29 PM

According to my local Subaru garage - Subaru have never heard of this!
Strange since it was in the parts catalogue.....
I'll have to do some more digging i think.

B4D HK 19 November 2011 09:55 AM

DaveyL let me know please bud. Im in dudley a bit later so will pop into showells and get back to you

Davey L 19 November 2011 02:35 PM

Can't find it anywhere in the accessories catalogue - online anyway. The local dealers and apparently Subaru have no clue. I'd like something to secure the gearbox my old blobeye has the old U lock to secure it in neutral but that was fitted when i bought it...
Can't even find anything on line, even on the Thatcham website...

Even more digging needed

B4D HK 23 November 2011 12:08 PM

right I have spoke to Showells (dealer) they retail at approx £150.....there is some suggestion they only fit 5speeds, get back to you :)

Davey L 23 November 2011 12:58 PM

I thank you...

If they have the details a part number would be nice..... just to shove up my local dealers nose
