smoking in works vehicles
This is becoming a contentious issue, mainly as the "no smoking" policy has not previously been enforced. Smokers who drive a van and have been happily smoking away are getting aggrieved when non smokers join their gang and ask them not to smoke in the vehicle. As an employer, I have a duty to protect the non smoker. But what does SN think?

its a pain in the ar$e we use a pool car at work, everybody but me smokes, usually its not too bad cause they open the windows when they are using it apart from 1 guy, he smokes with the windows up and when Im neext to use the motor it absolutely stinks

Dave - I agree. Ideally I would like to see no smoking at all (except outside). Only problem is that the MD is a chain smoker and smokes in his vehicle, site offices and the main office. There are other hardened smokers who try and find reasons not to take non smokers in their vans as they know that they will complain.

Theres no doubt, that smoking either yourself or passive is bad for the health. As one who has had cancer (not lung cancer though) I really dont want to be put in harms way. I might not be so lucky next time....... why should some one else endanger me?
|
So there are no die hards on SN who wish to inflict their smoke on all and sundry? What a civilised and considerate bunch you are. :)

I don't even smoke in my OWN vehicle if there's a non-smoker with me.. Unless they say it's fine and the window is down. The subject rarely comes up though, I just don't light up.
In a works vehicle, if I was using it on my own I might have one but never with the windows up, I have the windows down in my own car. Fag smoke is disgusting. I can't stand the smell of stale smoke in a car when I get in. |
Lingering cigar smoke adds to the value of the car
.:. I'm doing the company a favour |
I smoke but i dont smoke in my car coz it would fcukin ming like an ale house on New Years Day morning :(
I wouldn't buy a car that someone has smoked in I dont smoke in the house for the same reason I did occasionally smoke in my old company car but i wouldn't of bat an eyelid if the company said no smoking in any vehicles. |
If its no smoking at all in the vehicles, then I'd be stopping for very regular breaks to ensure I'm not driving tired.......
|
When I worked in retail many years ago everyone smoked except me. The worst thing was when one of them lit up, they all lit up.
Most smokers these days are normally aware of people around them and won't smoke at least without asking first. As for the poll, I'd say the best way was to ensure a complete ban otherwise you're going to have issues between workers. |
I smoke (just about), but dont smoke in the house, and try to avoid smoking in my cars. I would never smoke in a company vehicle, smells far too much.
|
I make sure I always drive - that way if someone wants to light up I can give them two choices:
1, Don't 2, Get out & walk Seems to work fine for me :D :D :D :D Matt |
IMHO non smokers don't want to get into a vehicle that stinks of stale smoke and sit in there :( I've had to do this with our van at work and it was disgusting. I had to drive 400 miles with the windows open  and that didn't get rid of the smell :(

Surely sparking a fag up whilst driving is more dangerous than talking on the phone?
My car is a no smoking zone, as is my house so if I had a business that would be smoke free too, including vehicles:) |
Actually no, if I had a business I wouldn't employ a smoker at all as I wouldn't want them to smoke inside and when you stop em doing that they skulk off outside and do nowt for half an hour a day, leaving the non smokers to carry the company!:p:D
