Info on buying a 911 targa - 1977 vintage
 

Mate thinking about one at the moment. I know little about them other than look for corrosion, heat exchangers and decent servicing. Is there a site or does anyone have any info. I believe it is for sale for around 8K, does this sound about right. It has covered 140K miles RHD.

He will probably use it on a daily basis, doent cover much mileage, maybe 5-10K per annum - is this practical?

They leak, but with the amount of mileage he will be doing this may not be a problem.

To be honest I dont think www.stuttgart9.co.uk will help on a car as old as that, although I could be wrong.

I have ine but havent used it beause it is going through the courts as I am suing the dealer.

First and foremost get it checked over by a porsche specialist or RAC.

Check tyres - wear quickly
check torsion bar and front suspension - many owners lower the suspension and it can bottom aout and destroy the suspension

check targo top fits and locks down - a new lock either side will cost £130 each.

check rear exhaust is sound

Handbrake fails and so ensure it is wokring properly - can be expensive if fails

steering should be precise

check for rot - if the body is rotting then the underneath certainly is - main areas are around windows and headlights and top of wings

check wheels are not kerbed

if it smokes walk away.

There are may out thee and if one is cheap then it may need £10k to be spent on it.

A good porsche 911 of any age before 1985 should be around £12k - £15k. Anything less than this will need work.

All in my opinion of course. If you buy a good one, you can use it everyday and people will take notice of it.

Was this the age which had exploding engines or gearboxes (I forget which)? I read something about late 70s 911s which put me off them entirely (4 yrs ago, so bit hazy now!)
