P****d off with uk turbo!!
 

Since i bought my uk turbo 2 months ago,all it has done is cause me bother.

I noticed today that my turbo was glowing red so i rang a.s. performance to ask what it could be.I was told that it sounds like the turbo bearing could be shot.
All this on top of the other problems im currently experiencing.
Ive already spent a fortune on a new clutch and gearbox casing,im really wishing i hadnt bought the car now.

I thought these cars were known for reliability!!

Sounds as if the previous owner ragged it to death then mate...bit unfortunate really as these cars are mostly well cared for

td04 turbos are quite easy to source and cheap enuf , this wont be that expensive a repair for you :)

mine had to have a new engine within 10 days of ownership, spent around 5k on it now, and still aint right, but wouldnt part with it either now, look at it as when it's done, it's done, hopefully wont need doing soon again, so long as you look after it, it'll be ok. previoius owner neglected it and killed it, new owner cherishes it!

Your not the only one mate ive only had mine 7months now im on my 2nd engine rebuild !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lucky for me its still under warranty :) still pisses you off a bit though ,mines a my/99.

ive got a uk 98, and touch wood in 2 years of ownership i've had no trouble what so ever..well except for fuel bill :)

Just depends on how well looked after they are, warm it up..let it cool down etc

If you really wind the car up over a reasonable distance, it would be normal for the turbo to run red hot. Just like your exhaust pipes if you could see them. It must be working alright to be able to boost the engine to sufficient power to make it glow anyway.

Silverscooby, many MY99/00 cars have bolwn up due to a failed MAF sensor (air flow in the air box) Watch you dont have a rebuild and it goes again due to a £70 sensor...

Snotboy, these cars are pretty bullet proof if you make sure you buy a good one, and its been treated well and you know the key things about them. As said, the turbo will glow red after a hard run. You'd hear it if the bearings were failing / failed.

My IHI VF37 regularly glows bright orange after serious use.

I took my car to see a specialist today and ive been a fool!!Someone needs to slap me.

The turbo doesnt glow red,its a kind of reddish rusty colour.I felt a right prat when i was told.Ive had that many problems with past cars i always expect the worst.

I found out that one of the gaskets between the turbo and downpipe has blown,so thats why im getting all these symptoms of erratic idle and loss of power.Im going to have a go at fitting a new one next week,so fingers crossed,this is my only problem.

ps. Snotboy - no need to feel bad about the turbo thing. When my last car was a few weeks old I took it into a dealer because I thought the rear diff housing had cracked :eek:

The mechanic took a look at it, put it on a ramp, inspected it closely, hesitated for a while - and wiped off a thin line of black crud that looked for all the world like a hairline fracture. I felt a prat at the time too - but at least someone who really should have known better still had to put the car up on a ramp to check it out. I guess the absence of thick, gloopy oil dripping onto the drive was the giveaway...

So im not the only idiot on here then! lol :p

I was wondering,because my gasket has blown,can this make the car run rich?It must be having some affect on the Lambda if theres air escaping.????

Yes it will affect it snotboy. Glad its a simple problem anyway. Make sure you have got some good quality sockets etc to undo the nuts, they can get really difficult to shift initially. Straight sided sockets are less likely to take the corners off the nuts.

If you are still getting errattic idle and poor running after changing the turbo gasket, the next point of call is most definately the Air flow (MAF) sensor.

v v common on these - and exactly the symptoms you describe.

Does it actually cut out when you come to a stop occasionally? - If it does it almost certainly MAF sensor.

n.b You are right in that a leaking turbo gasket will confuse the Lamda sensor.

n.n.b - those turbo bolts - a reet bastid at times (have fun!)

The car doesnt stall but the CEL has started to pop on every now and again for about a minute.Could this be due to the blown gasket?

I have a spare MAF in my garage,so if i still have problems i will get it whacked on.

Firstly you can get the subaru garage to check out the stored ECU codes that caused the CEL light to come on. My MY99 did this a while back and it was due to the knock sensor. The CEL would come on just after starting the car from cold for about a minute the go out. They changed the sensor and it is OK now, may just have been a bad connection is suppose.

Glad top hear the prob is only minor but just to 2nd 3rd etc what everyone else has been saying you may want to get a new MAF sensor.

Had mine in a scooby dealer about 6 times for varous complaints that they never figured out and replace allsorts but turned out to be MAF.

The only time I have noticed my turbo glowing red was when the MAF was F****ed and it was running way too lean. Just glad I didn't give it too much or would have prob melted the engine!!

Mine is well looked after and it was warm,It also was the first time i had put my foot down since i got my car back from the first time it went!!!!!!!!
