Which Manifold + turbo

now my turbo blew lastnight, ive decided while its off the road, im going to get some better headers for it before it goes back on the road.

my friends tell me the Gruppe-S headers will make the car an awsome drive, and im after a TD05 F/E turbo aswell...

could anyone point me in direction of getting the correct Gruppe-S headers for my car online (Impreza Turbo UK 1997 model (Sti 4 model)

also is it worth changing my up pipe while im at it if im going to a TD05 from a TD04?

what ECU's can i put on my car?

im having problems finding a ECU which is good for a 97 turbo, as the Link, ECUtec ones only seem to be 99+?

ideally i would like a prodrive ECU

now im putting a TD05 turbo on my car and performance manifold, would a Sti V4 ECU not work on my car? or Sti model in same year?

mine is a 99 and i have a power fc on :D i have tried the ecutek route and been to a few different mappers, but the power fc beats them hands down :D plus the power fc when combined with an avcr will make the td05 great , when i had my td05 on it used to peak between 1.6/1.7 bar ;)

D R Motorsport 'GT Spec Gen II' headers are fantastic quality and include an up-pipe, also they are fantastic value for money at £450 delievered.

STI ECU wont work on your UK car.

ECU wise I would recommend an Apexi Power FC mapped by Andy F, £700 fitted and mapped.

What are the headers and what do they do? Also whats best, equal or unequal length?

unequal length are cosidered to be one of the better options, and as far as im aware headers allow you to run more power with less boost

as far as im aware u lose the burble with equal length manifolds.... but id rather have the performance increase tbh!

im sure it will sound good still when it gets going!

headers are exhaust manifold which take the gas from the engine :),
equal is best....but you will lose the boxer sound :( so unequal to keep the burble :).
both will give you more torque through out the rev range :)

The D R Motorsport headers I recomended are unequal length. I have some on mine, the burble changes to a slightly less deep sound, but it's still the scooby burble.

don't listen to the nonsense about equal and unequal length headers. No aftermarket imprezas I have ever seen for the impreza are equal length.

Equal length is about matching the resonacne frequencies of all the runners, so you get a pulse tuned exhaust length which can effectively at the correct rpm point suck the exhasut out of your car and give you a volumetric efficiency of greater than 100%, sadly this is all screwed up by the turbo being in the way, so don't pay much attention to theory, although you can't anyway, because as I said none of those available are really equal length.

There is more to it than just construction, my recommendation would be to go for the old MRT design which seems to have very small primaries, but having been in a car as it is mapped, I know how amazing they were compared with standard.

Alternatively, go for any of the HKS design options. These are the HKS themselves or the gruppe S (get the version 2s as they have thicker flanges), failing that contact lateral performance as they have also sell a version which fits this mould.

Incidentally, most of the burble comes from a combination of the length of the primaries and also the fact that the standard ones are cast of much thicker steel, this makes for a completely different sound. No tubular header is ever going to give you the same burble. The length will go some way to retaining it, the HKS does to some extent, it certainly does on mine.

To save money, you might find that porting your standard headers will make quite a difference and will only cost you a few hours labour with a suitable tool.

As for mapping, there are links available for your model year, I don't think a power FC is made for your model year but you could check that with andy forest.

I wouldn't be keen on a prodrive ecu, they are known for their conservative mapping, also unless you go to them for a fresh map, it won't be tailored to your car. This is crucial with you having a non standard turbo and headers.

In order of price, consider the link, gems and then motec. all of these do a model for your car. Trouble with gems is it must be mapped by steve simpson so you lose your choice.

For a link consider br developments, bob wont see you go wrong., equally you could speak to pat herborn, I have his details if you need thm.

ecuteks are not available for pre 99 model year cars, but you could have an equivalent from pat which reflashes your standard ecu according to your mods. This is probably the cheapest option and will retain the functionality of the standard ecu and hence will be the least noticable, only trouble is if you want to dabble into mapping yourself, you can't.
