'When Suddenly the lid fell off'...........

War of the Worlds, the album, just downloaded it (have it on LP in the loft but not record player) and its really good to hear it again after 20 years.

Go on dig it out, its not as cheesy as I thought and I am doing cd's for the kids to give it a listen.

"The Martians released their Black Smoke, but the ship sped on, cutting
down one of the tripod figures. Instantly, the others raised their Heat Rays and melted the Thunder Child's valiant heart"

I was gutted when Thunder Child got melted......

Fantastic stuff ! Bet they make a pigs ear of the movie.

carl 30 October 2004 08:25 PM

Got it on vinyl and CD.

"No-one could have believed, in the last years of the 19th century, that human affairs were being watched from the timeless worlds of space. No-one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possibility of life on other worlds, yet surely, and slowly, they drew their plans against us."

Has to be said (now half way through, drunkish listening to Forever Autumn) its a Gem !

As the crowd swept me away from her.....

At school I told the teacher (Mr Bury, best teacher in the world ever) an we listened to it every night for 2 weeks and did a big freize on the wall, me in charge(ish), it was wonderful, hen some fcuker broke in and ripped it all down but we had the photos, it was magnificent.

Ubik 30 October 2004 08:39 PM

My dad used to play it at maximum volume when I was a kid. Scared the willies out of me, I used to sit in the garden until my mum found me turning blue and banned it from being played.

Now, twenty odd years later, I can enjoy it. Still sends a shiver down my spine when the marsians call out 'Ullah'.

NotoriousREV 31 October 2004 09:08 AM

Yep, it used to terrify me too, fantastic stuff :D

.Dave 31 October 2004 09:45 AM

Been listening to it again this week too, its great!

SJ_Skyline 31 October 2004 09:54 AM

Is David Essex still alive?

carl 31 October 2004 10:06 AM

"Bows and arrows against the lightning. They haven't seen the heat ray yet."

When the smoke cleared, the little steamer had reached the
misty horizon, and Carrie was safe. But the Thunder Child had vanished forever,
taking with her man's last hope of victory. The leaden sky was lit by green flashes,
cylinder following cylinder, and no one and nothing was left now to fight them. The
Earth belonged to the Martians.

They have already made a pigs ear of the movie by casting Tom Cruise !!!, and for the sequels too

Heard that Justin Hayward song a lot on radio recently.

mart360 31 October 2004 03:19 PM

I have it also

told my 11 year old it was a story being told with music , naration and singing,

was a bit unsure as his tastes are not the same as mine..

it blew him away.....for weeks on end we played it in the car..

he thinks its amazing..

he made me get the original film on vid.. and that made him jump too!!!

A classic if you ask me

mart

astraboy 31 October 2004 04:03 PM

good album,
better book,
Dont bother with the americanised film though :p
astraboy.

Bonehead 31 October 2004 05:05 PM

Utter classic :D

It used to scare the s**t out of me when I was young (all that ullaaahhh stuff)

That 'real life' martian in Woking was v disapointing when you see it for real - mind you Woking's a right dump. Could do with someone using the heat ray on it!

I bet the septics'll ruin the story with the new film.

*Sonic* 31 October 2004 09:33 PM

I had forgetton just how good this is, not bad for a 1978 recording :)

Just listening to it now, after some strange bizarre reason of humming all the tunes for the last few months !!

Probably all the talk of the new movie that reminded me of it again after all these years

Got it on Vinyl & CD, but Vinyl is far superior :D :D

Midlife...... 31 October 2004 10:45 PM

"the summer sun is fading as the year grows old, and darker days are drawing near"........

Just wondered where you downloaded it from ??

Midlife.....

*Sonic* 31 October 2004 10:46 PM

Bit Torrent :)

Dream Weaver 31 October 2004 11:10 PM

We had the full boxed set when I was a kid, wish we still had it. :(

"The chances of anything coming from Mars, are a million to one they said!!"

WRX Jase 01 November 2004 08:53 AM

Nice to know I wasn't the only who used to be scared stoopid by this as a kid. Thought it was just me.

First time my dad played it I couldn't sleep for weeks afterwards. Should've known better really as I was 23 at the time ;-)

Like a support group this thread "Friends of the War of the Worlds Victims" just remember guys - we have done nothing to be ashamed of.

Question is am I cruel enough to inflict this on my own offspring in a few years time......... ?

mad_dr 01 November 2004 08:55 AM

Is this the Jeff Wayne - Rock/musical version we're talking about? The era sounds about right.

Heard that version a couple of times and was blown away by it too!
